Because of that no application can connect to the mysql server through sockets. After installation (or at least reboot) the directory get following permissions: drwx------ 2 mysql mysql 60 May 11 18:55 mysql But to access the socket file the directory permissons should be: drwxr-xr-x 2 mysql mysql 60 May 11 18:55 mysql With mysql-community-server package version 5.6.35-22.1 that works fine.
