No, perl is correct. It will just backrack a lot trying to match. Watch this:
print ">$_<\n" for "{ 1234567890" =~ /(.*?) ( \{ (?: [^{}]* | (?-1))* \} )/x;
vs.
print ">$_<\n" for "{ 123456789012345678901234567890" =~ /(.*?) ( \{ (?: [^{}]*
| (?-1))* \} )/x;
