Please reassign this to XFCE team.
My steps was upgrade from openSuse 11.4 to 12.1m5.
After upgrade I had gmixer to control my volume.
As it is no more maintained and does not contain important features (options)
then the default should be xfce4-panel-plugin-mixer which was for me the only
which works for me (now after searching for alternative).
If possible then the switch (gmixer -> xfce4-panel-plugin-mixer) should be
automatic during system upgrade.
If it is possible then the xfce4-panel-plugin-mixer should be added during
installation/upgrade to the panel (if sound card available?).
