--- Comment #42 from Silviu Marin-Caea 2011-09-21 12:08:55 UTC ---
I confirm the (good) behavior: module lp is loaded only when a job is sent to
printer.
So, adding commands to create a static device node in the package
udev-configure-
printer seems the best solution.
Precisely these:
mknod /lib/udev/devices/lp0 c 6 0
chown :lp /lib/udev/devices/lp0
chmod 0660 /lib/udev/devices/lp0
But if the computer does not actually have a parallel port, could this break
anything? I mean wouldn't that introduce delays in YaST printer detection or
something of the sort?
And another thing: on my 11.4 installation at home, the package
udev-configure-printer was not installed by default. I found it installed on a
Tumbleweed system.
Looking deeper into this, it appears that the package is generated from
system-config-printer-1.2.5-4.1.src.rpm. This is printer configuration tool
that originates from Fedora. The .src.rpm is the source for a number of
packages and udev-configure-printer is one of them. vuntz@opensuse.org appears
in the package changelog, so I'll CC him this bug to get his opinion.
So, Vincent, what do you think about adding those commands to
udev-configure-printer? Does that seem the Right Thing(tm) to you?
