regrading UTF-8 characters: I don't think so.
This is a Fisher Price "Kids Tough" digital camera.
I just did a few things that might be useful:
1. I booted windows XP. XP mounts it fine, sees all the files.
2. Booted openSUSE 11.1. Lots of errors in /var/log/messages.
Ultimately, the device was unusable (no /dev/sdNN was ever made available --
see below).
3. In openSUSE 11.2, This is what I get for /var/log/messages:

[259231.329269] hub 5-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
and now it won't even locate the block device (/dev/sdb doesn't exist!)
I had a similar problem with my MMC reader where I needed to rmmod the kernel
module and reload it, at which point it worked fine.
I'm loathe to reboot right now, but if I end up doing so later today I'll post
here if the usb driver works again.
Here is the weird thing. i used to use this laptop to copy the images from the
camera when the laptop was running openSUSE 11.1. For whatever reason, the
entire device is unavailable to both versions of openSUSE 11.1 and 11.2 on
three different machines! Sigh.
Windows XP sees the device just fine. I have no idea what to make of this.
I'm thinking about using Windows to reformat the device and see what happens.
However, that just papers over the problem.
