Ladislav, if the only problem is _HOW_ to do it, there usually is a way.
Most machines nowadays have SMBIOS, so you could query the memory modules like
this:
azariah:~ # dmidecode -q -t 6
Memory Module Information
Socket Designation: DIMM Slot 1
Bank Connections: 0 1
Current Speed: 155 ns
Type: DIMM SDRAM
Installed Size: 1024 MB (Double-bank Connection)
Enabled Size: 1024 MB (Double-bank Connection)
Error Status: OK
Memory Module Information
Socket Designation: DIMM Slot 2
Bank Connections: 2 3
Current Speed: 155 ns
Type: DIMM SDRAM
Installed Size: 1024 MB (Double-bank Connection)
Enabled Size: 1024 MB (Double-bank Connection)
Error Status: OK
I'm not absolutely sure that showing the sum of all these numbers is really
what most users will appreciate, though...
Oh, and BTW on some machines (especially very large ones, e.g. an s390x or a
1024-CPU Itanium server) you may often see installed but not enabled memory
modules. Should the installed size be reported, or the currently enabled?
