Sigh, I believe that I indicated in comment #5 that I removed the
proprietary driver and the same problem is still present. Since then,
X has terminated unexpectedly several times with the message shown
in comment #5.
bash also died once just before X died.
I believe that the attachments don't show that the fglrx driver is
loaded. So, I can't complain to ATI unless there is a hardware issue.
Still as noted in comment #1, X doesn't seem to die when the system
is loaded. The system is stable running Vista 64-bit.
This is probably not relevant but why all the calls to BlankCRTC
in Xorg.0.log:
(II) RADEONHD(0): Calling BlankCRTC
(II) RADEONHD(0): BlankCRTC Successful
