I was also unpleasantly surprised by this 'feature' that caused my Dell
Inspiron 6400 laptop with openSUSE 11.1 Beta 4 to bleep. This is really a bug
in my humble opinion, in fact I came here to write a bug report about this. I
would suggest the following:
Before openSUSE 11.1 final do one or all of the following:
* Change the default behavior to *no* bleep on startup, if 'users' requested
this feature I am pretty sure that doesn't include *all* users.
* Make it possible to set/unset the bleep via Yast2 or by editing the menu.lst
file or something but put the effort of turning on this feature with the users
that requested it, and don't put the effort of turning this feature off on the
users that didn't request this 'feature'.
* Finally, please inform users about this change and *clear* instructions on
how to enable/disable it again (I predict 99% of the users is going to disable
this 'feature' - if they can). There are some posts about changing something to
the message file but it is not exactly clear to me what I'm supposed to do.
I changed the priority to P2 because for my work a silent laptop is essential
and I would really need this to be taken care of before the final release.
On a side note, what's this with openSUSE and bleeping computers? First the
pcspkr module that was integrated into the kernel (luckily that's fixed now)
and now this ... I don't understand who wants to to have their computer bleep
without them explicitly telling to, I for one don't. I want to be able to start
up my laptop during a seminar just before I am supposed to give a talk without
drawing all eyes on me - I cannot imagine I'm alone in that feeling. I just
want my computer to be silent, forever and always. The only time I want it to
make any sound, is when I'm listening to a song, or watching a movie. I don't
care for errors, or notifications, in fact I don't care if it catches on fire,
unless the world is about to come to and end my laptop shouldn't bleep!
I'm no Windows advocate but at least with Windows you can go into the Sound
settings, select 'No Sounds' and trust your computer will be silent till the
end of it's days. I wish openSUSE has that feature too. Now I have to go around
all the places and disable sounds manually.
