[Bug 439328] New: speaker beep when GRUB is loaded
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=439328 Summary: speaker beep when GRUB is loaded Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@novell.com ReportedBy: christian.widmer@student.uni-tuebingen.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- When GRUB is loaded, I get a beep signal on my laptop's (Dell Vostro 1500) PC speaker. Unless this is some kind of error message, it really should not be that way, as it must be possible to boot a system quietly. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

For now, if you need to disable it
gfxboot --change-config boot::beep=0
should do the job for you.
to be correct you must also recreate your message file so: gfxboot --change-config boot::beep=0 gfxboot --pack-archive /boot/message -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

We will change this to beep on installation but not with any other boot.
after testing beta5 DVD I'd like to advocate to disable the beep even for the DVD media boot. rationale/scenario: usually I keep the opensuse DVD in the dvd drive of my notebook because (a) I can add new packages whil being offline (almost all time) and (b) the DVD is "available" whenever I have to boot/install another system... now with the new dvd-boot-beep policy my notebook would beep at every boot and there is no way to "configure" the DVD9 :-( btw: after updating beta5 to beta5 the grub on hard disk still beeps. is this disk-boot-beep supposed to be disabled in beta5 already or is this fix only scheduled for RC ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Disabling it on the CD/DVD would 'lock out' the users with disabilities, which we can easily avoid like this.
talking about disabilities I agree that the beep is a resonable feature -- I only thought about sleeping admins and here I'd have declined the necessity;)
for your specific use-case I would suggest you change the BIOS boot order to skip the CD-ROM.
good suggestion. actually in "normal operation" (except for beta-test or hardware/driver rests) I tend to boot as rarely as possible anyway, but right now.... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Harald,
for your specific use-case I would suggest you change the BIOS boot order to skip the CD-ROM.
What would be nice if it was possible to add an entry to the GRUB menu 'boot from CD-rom', I remember a few years ago that was default ... I guess it was removed for security reasons but there's no reason a home users shouldn't be able to add that entry again, right? If only it was documented somewhere ... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
