So, if all that's correct, XAA/TexturedVideo works great without Compiz. So maybe what we're looking at to make things work reasonably well out of the box (with the current driver states) are these sets of conservative defaults:
Compiz off, XAA on, TexturedVideo on, Xv on Compiz on, XAA on, TexturedVideo off, Xv off
Not sure what you mean with Xv. Overlay? When compiz on, both off?!?
Is this even possible, to have different defaults depending on Compiz?
Unfortunately that's not possible. compiz is an X11 application running on top of the Xserver.
