At least on intel (945GM) you're running into all kind of problems with such
a setting. DRI, Tiling, FramebufferCompression gets disabled. In some more
detail:
(EE) intel(0): Cannot support DRI with frame buffer width > 2048.
[...]
(II) intel(0): Allocating 4800 scanlines for pixmap cache
(EE) intel(0): Failed to allocate framebuffer. Is your VideoRAM set too low?
(II) intel(0): Tiled allocation failed.
(WW) intel(0): Couldn't allocate tiled memory, fb compression disabled
(II) intel(0): Attempting memory allocation with untiled buffers.
(II) intel(0): Allocating 4800 scanlines for pixmap cache
(II) intel(0): Untiled allocation successful.
(II) intel(0): adjusting plane->pipe mappings to allow for framebuffer
compression
[...]
(II) intel(0): direct rendering: Disabled
[...]
(II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable
(II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so
(II) GLX: Initialized DRISWRAST GL provider for screen 0
So for intel this looks like a bad idea.
