Seems like a wiring or cable detection problem to me. The cable probably isn't
capable of UDMA/133 and pukes when asked to transfer data at that speed. After
a few such failures, libata backs down to lower speed and it becomes okay;
however, at that point, reading partition table already has failed.
Johannes, please post /var/log/boot.msg of opensuse10.2 boot media. I'm
curious whether amd74xx or ide-generic is being used and if amd74xx is being
used it had any different opinion about the cable. (ide-generic never uses DMA
so it doesn't matter).
Also, how is your drive wired? Are you using a 80-c cable? If the drive is
the only one on the channel, is it connected to the end connector or the middle
one?
