--- Comment #13 from Klaus Kämpf 2007-07-27 00:43:22 MST ---
- Size of metadata, even compressed, is significant and on CDs, every byte
counts
- Putting metadata on CDs means to freeze the repos when the ISO image is
created. This might not be possible.
- Whats the average internet bandwidth users have today ? Whats the average
download time for the metadata in question ? How much time will users save by
having metadata on CD ?
Summary: I currently don't think its worth the effort and makes more problems
than it solves.
We should think about using P2P for distributing metadata (see
http://www.edos-project.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/Wp4) in the future.
Long term, I'd like to look into "metadata as a service" instead of "metadata
as a file". Repositories would then be database servers, processing requests
from clients. Clients would download just the metadata they need and cache it.
