The problem is, that the files under /etc/nmh are not marked as config files in
the package, and so RPM just overwrites them. AFAICS these files were never
marked as config on SUSE (at least not since 9.1, I didn't check it further
back), so if you got a backup copy in a previous update, you either created it
yourself (maybe as an auto-backup of the editor you used), or you were using a
non-SUSE nmh RPM, that did mark /etc/nmh/* as config files.
As I only recently took over responsibility for the nmh package, I don't know
why the /etc/nmh/* files weren't marked as config before, but my guess is, that
it was just an oversight of the previous maintainers.
I just changed it for openSUSE 10.3.
