Summary: SuSE 10.2 freezes unless NOAPIC added as kernel option
at bootup
Product: openSUSE 10.2
Version: Final
Platform: x86
OS/Version: SuSE Other
Status: NEW
Severity: Major
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Usability
AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com
ReportedBy: heseltine@attglobal.net
QAContact: siegfried.olschner@novell.com
Machine: IBM Thinkcentre model S50 8086-36U. Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz (1MB),
800MHz FSB, 1GB ram, 160GB 7200RPM IDE HDD, PCI Ultra Small Form Factor (1x2),
Intel Extreme Graphics 2, 24x CD-ROM, Intel Gigabit Ethernet.
Connected to Starview KVM switch model SV231USB.
USB keyboard;
USB mouse
ps/2 backup mouse
Running SuSE Linux v. 10.2. Clean install with update. Default settings apart
from software - KDE desktop added.
NEC Multisync E750 running at 1600 x 1024 full colour, 70 hz.
PROBLEM: System freezes during inactivity (overnight) after monitor, USB
mouse, and USB keyboard are disconnected via KVM switch.
SOLUTION: Adding "noapic" to kernel option line at boot selector start up
window seems to correct the fault. No further freezes are seen to occur up to a
week later.
REMARKS: System installs without incident. Programmes work. However, when
switched out to 2nd system using KVM switch for a period of time (overnight),
and then switched back in the morning, the USB keyboard and USB mouse are not
activated. However, system awakes on use of backup ps/2 mouse. The system then
freezes at next command (say hovering over clock, or clicking on 'start
button'). The ps/2 mouse cursor continues to work. When the K Menu button is
initially clicked there is a response but the system then hangs, leaving the
menu open. A subsequent click on a sub menu does not respond or may respond
after a very long time. However, no subsequent clicks work. For example,
clicking initially on the 'start' button brings up its menu but then clicking
on shutdown causes no response. Hard boot then required. Interestingly, moving
the pointer to the frozen but open K menu changes the pointer to the rotating
clock type. Its rotating hand does not advance. However clicking the ps/2 mouse
quickly a number of times sometimes advances the hand on the waiting cursor
clock.
I have not been successful at creating this freezing problem logging into
console mode. However, I have not tried logging into console mode long enough
to determine if the same problem arises. If I can recreate the problem in
console mode, I will add a further note.
I could not attach the var/log/messages file or the boot.msg file as they were
too long.
Thank you for reading this report.
