If you got a thermal shutdown you should see something in dmesg.
Do you get a hit if you do: "grep -i crit /var/log/messages"?
Can you post the line (or better whole /var/log/message contents) if you get
something. Sometimes there are totally insane temperature values reported and
machine shuts down.

Can you also paste output of "cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/trip_points"
if you found a critical temperature shutdown.
