There's a sata_sil driver in the 2.6 kernels (and >2.4.27) that works for this chipset, so you don't need to use a 3rd party driver anymore. So yes, 9.1 will work with that chipset.
That's not a given. The siimage driver will kick in first unless you disable it in the kernel. I think the word is that siimage actually works with Tyan, but there are controllers where it will not work (in which case you'd better have another controller for booting). So you might want to wait for a response from someone with a Tyan board.
