[opensuse-xorg] problems after update to 11.4
Hello List, i did an update to 11.4 and got some strange trouble. the default kernel did not generate a useable system, since i had no keybord etc. (under investigation) the desktop failsafe worked. I got the desktop version working with acpi=on since the i915.ko did not load without (bug ?). Now i am stuck with KDE. It is to smart for its own good. It tries to change the GFX config and gets it wrong. Changing the WM "solves" the problem but that is not what i want. Walter, You didn't tell us much....what were you updating from, for instance? Sometimes it's better to backup all user data (or keep it on a separate partition/disk) and do a new install. hi, I was updating the system from Opensuse 11.2 to 11.4. There is nothing special with the system, so i was not expecting problems. re, wh ps: /home is always a special part hier, but i would like to understand what is going on. KDE isn't designed for configuring X, only limited tweaking. You could try YaST2 in one of the other WMs, or just boot the default kernel to runlevel 3, login as root, 'cd /etc/X11', 'mv xorg.conf xorg.conf-112', 'init 5', and see if auto config X gets you what you need. Keyboard and mouse drivers in 11.4 are different from those in 11.2, and your xorg.conf is probably setting use of uninstalled drivers. I don't know why other WMs might still work. The problem with the "default" OS11.4 is more general. I have no clue what it may be but the kdb (USB) is not functioning, gfx is not fount etc. I suspect it may be a problem with the modules setup, as i see much less modules in the /lib/modules/"default" tree than in the desktop tree.

When i go to runlevel 5 the display manager works fine, starting a kde session causes ghost mirror images, making the system unusabele, stopping kde resets the Gfx into a usable state. Replacing KDE with fvwm2 .. everything is fine. There are no special setups for KDE of what so ever involved. even removing .kde* does not help.

It doesn't. Furthermore, ACPI is normal/standard/supported on newer systems, one reason we need to know which chip you have if you want usable help. That is precisely the result I get on my Dell GX620 running 11.4 and KDE. What this means is it should work for you too, as long as certain (yet to be fully determined) requirements are first met.

I'm sure it is. Nowhere in this thread have I read a clear statement that you have tried removing (renaming) /etc/X11/xorg.conf, which as created by 11.2 is unlikely to work in 11.4. Did you try that yet? My 945/11.4's KDE works, as intended, using no xorg.conf file. KDE worked correctly for me on first entry to runlevel 5, though this (intentionally) did not happen on first boot, since I included a 3 on the Grub kernel line in menu.lst. Moreover, I did all my updating prior to first entry to runlevel 3, and installed fresh, instead of attempting an unsupported upgrade from 11.2. Since installing 11.4, have you done all the updates? If not, do them first with 'zypper up' from root login before proceeding further in trying to make X work properly. If all the above fails to get you your KDE, please 'init 3' from root login on a tty, delete ~/.xsession errors, 'init 5', attempt to log into KDE, then as soon as it fails (before trying another DTE), provide: 1-~/.xsession-errors 2-/var/log/Xorg.0.log If necessary to open some other DTE in order to respond here, first copy them somewhere before logging in. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
