GDM trouble

hi list, perhaps a bit off-topic. can someone tell where gdm is writing it logs ? The (suse-)greeter started to crash suddeny (yes realy) and i can not find any reason. re, walter ps: how can i change the menus ? i would like to stop users shutting down the machine.
