[opensuse-wiki] SDB categories
as long as we can't sort the special:category page, we need to have no more than ~50 categories. I propose to cut off the "SDB:" prefix _in categories_ only. I don't see the SDB page having a sufficient particularity to keep it your advice? jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki-unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki-help@opensuse.org

How could you possibly restrict the number of categories, when they are so easy to create? I will agree with your statement if you change it to 'Uncategorised' Categories. http://en.opensuse.org/Special:Uncategorizedcategories
From which you can get to all categories.

I can't see the effort being worth the benefit. (read: there is probably other things that the wiki needs more) I will agree that SDB in general is not well integrated with the general structure of the wiki, and there is some confusion and duplication. I agree here. I've spent some time reducing this list, and probably need to do more. The uncategorized categories is probably one of the worst named, and most important of the special pages. In my mind I refer to it as the "Top Level Category List" and feel it is the best place to start when looking for something that search doesn't find. Perhaps we need to rename it, or at least insert some text to explain just what it does. My goal is to keep the list below 30 entries, and 20 would be better, I'd like to be able to see all of the list on the screen at once. Sorry for the fancy word, but it's what I need. ( conflation = to bring together ) :-) The following Top categories need to be pushed down, but I'm not sure where. Do we need a Top Category for system issues? Or does someone have a better term? Category:Accessibility <http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Accessibility> Category:Grub <http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Grub> Category:Java <http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Java> Category:Usability <http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Usability> Category:Virtualization <http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Virtualization> Category:Wireless <http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Wireless> Category:X Window System <http://en.opensuse.org/Category:X_Window_System> maybe Category:IW <http://en.opensuse.org/Category:IW> In addition, as recommended on the OpenSUSE Style Guide <http://en.opensuse.org/OpenSUSE_Style_Guide>, Category names should not be abbreviations. So SDB and IW should change. --- L Greg Lisle

Category:Accessibility <http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Accessibility>
User interfaces?
Category:Grub <http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Grub>
boot loaders (sub: lilo, grub, various windows)
Category:Java <http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Java>
programming languages plugins (the same category can be in several top categories)
Category:Usability <http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Usability>
user interface
Category:Virtualization <http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Virtualization>
this could be a top one, may be with a different name? virtual computers?
Category:Wireless <http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Wireless>
networking
Category:X Window System <http://en.opensuse.org/Category:X_Window_System>
?? graphic interface?
maybe Category:IW <http://en.opensuse.org/Category:IW>
IW category is no more necessary? As IW is a template, removing the categiry from the template should do the trick. The category was initially to know what pages had got IW and what had not, but the use of IW is now restricted to few known pages my 2 cents jdd
In addition, as recommended on the OpenSUSE Style Guide <http://en.opensuse.org/OpenSUSE_Style_Guide>, Category names should not be abbreviations. So SDB and IW should change.

The logical structure of category tree is what I'm trying to learn about and give proposal that is easy acceptable for majority opensuse.org users. The top level categories are one of problems. While it is relative easy to find template for SUSE Linux as operating system related logical structure in directory tree on FTP server, for the rest I have to see what is done on Open Directory (dmoz.org), Wikipedia and any other public source that can be analyzed and applied if appropriate. We can try to come up with proposals what we consider as names for basic categories and than to develop the tree. Right now I have some partial idea how to solve above category problem: SUSE Linux - System - User Interface - Accessibility SUSE Linux - System - Startup - Boot Process - Boot Loader - GRUB,LILO SUSE Linux - System - Virtual Machine - Java SUSE Linux - Development - Programming Languages - Java SUSE Linux - Usability - User Interface - Accessibility SUSE Linux - Usability - Applications SUSE Linux - Usability - System This might be tough, as it is applicable to any aspect of computing so it is pretty much one of basic categories. SUSE Linux - System - Virtualization SUSE Linux - System - [Networking | Networks] - Network Devices - Wireless SUSE Linux - System -[ Networking | Networks] - Network Protocols - Wireless SUSE Linux - System - X Window System - X Server SUSE Linux - Graphics - X Window System - Applications -- Regards, Rajko.
