[opensuse-wiki] net install

trying to install the 10.2 RC by the net I noticed some problems: * I couldn't acheive the install, the downloading of the system stuck at 15% (approx) - only for the record, no aswer expected here * the wiki gives the web page with the url of the inst-source, but ** Yast asks for the IP of the server. this is not so easy to find. one must open an xterm, make a ping to the server url... this is quite natural for linux (is it?) but for windows users seeking for linux it's absolutely unusable. we shoulkd have some way to give the IP in a small popup ** I got from the web page an URL "http://ftp.opensuse.org/...." I mostly got the "ftp" part so, in yast asked for "ftp" install. Nothing happen then, but a stuck window "calling ftp server", so I noticed than, even named "ftp.opensuse.org", the server servez http protocol, and with choosing http from yast, it at least tried to dl the system... in fact when yast is in ftp mode, it tries to connect to the server first (before asking for the directory) and fail jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/mediawiki/index.php/GPS_Lowrance_GO --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

This is old as S.u.S.E. The truth is that the name works as well. -- Regards, Rajko M. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org

I think it depends. If you are using DHCP and the DHCP answer also contains the IP-address of a DNS then you can use the name. If you are using a fixed IP-address, it will not work, unless Yast asks for the IP-address of the DNS and you provide one. -- fr.gr. Yes, it depends, but network must be reachable. I remember old times there was network setup screen for static IP, and there was option to enter DNS server. I used IP of ftp server only the very first time I installed SUSE, later I found out that the server name works too. -- Regards, Rajko M. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-wiki+help@opensuse.org
