If one set up separate wiki for translations in progress, than set of pages that are mandatory can be extended with another sets that are recommended to follow. This way translators will have easier job. They would not need to evaluate articles and set priorities, over and over again.

I don't see the need for the mandatory pages to be on there in English. Don't store the same info in two places if you don't need to. (except backups).

I would consider mandatory pages in protected form as a kind of backup, that will save time to revert changes made by inexperienced wiki users. Maybe some technical advice how to translate, ie. how to have original and the translation in the same time on the screen would help volunteers to do their job with pleasure. Again this will save time to reinvent some technique that professional translators are using all the time.

The greatest benefit would be if we can get rid of the Template:Translations, and us an Interwiki link to "temporary translations".

Perhaps we can modify the interwiki functionalty so that you can overide the default and give it a language.

eg:

[[tmp:This page]] woudl create an interwiki link, but because many languages woudl be on the temp site on one English page you could have

[[tmp:EL-This page]] [[tmp:OH-This page]]

These would all appear as Intewiki links but all labelled the same.

Maybe we could extend so that the Interwiki label can be set like

[[tmp:EL-This page|Elfish]] [[tmp:OG-This page|Ogerish]]

And appear in the list of languages.

More aloud thinking :-) we can make en.opensuse.org/Translations (or Localization) an index of all translations. It will point to the same kind of index page on each translated (localized) wiki or prefixed localized index for work in progress. Like xy.opensuse.org/<word for Translations in local xy language> or translation.opensuse.org/XY-<word for Translations in local xy language> Advantage of this is that instead of zillions of links to translated pages in other languages we have all located in one place. Each page that has at least one translation will need only one link to the local index that will point visitor to other localized indexes. This 2 clicks must happen only once for each visitor, after that it can be bookmarked and go there directly. The maintenance of links would be easier for translators and sysops. For now with small number of translations it is possible to link everything to everything, but with each new language the number of updates grows very fast. With n localizations you have to visit and update (n-1) other pages for each new article, instead of one, your local index. Can you imagine how that would work for 50 translations, and that is going to happen in a few years. Not to mention that each page that has translations will be cluttered with 49 links that majority of visitors will never use. It would be advantage for new volunteers translators too, as they would have in one place all what is done. right now, it's quite difficult to follow the life of the en wiki, recent changes as filled by translations

and don't make mistakes, the fact that translations are going on is _very good_, thanks a lot to all the translators, SUSE will rule the world :-))
