I don't know if this is an opensuse problem of a mediawiki one - I know the search box is often questioned - I myself openned a bug on this recently before seeing that the problem is worst than I knowed problem is: when typing a word and hitting search, an exact word match in the title must be found to have a return (task don't gives the page "tasks") worst, only the first occurence is given ("bugs" gives only one page) compared to that the google search "site:opensuse.org bugs" gives all the answers, in all langages. so Google is far better than opensuse own search box. this is a problem in itself :-) and even more because it's not possible to insert a google search box in the wiki, so one need to type "site:opensuse" each time what is quite boring :-) is there a solution? thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

One way around, until admin guys find some solution, is Konqueror web shortcuts. KDE Control Center -- Internet&Network -- Web Shortcuts or in Konqueror : Settings --Configure Konqueror -- Web Shortcuts Click on button New. Search provider: Google Site Search URI: http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en-us&q=\{site%3Aopensuse.org+@}&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 Search Shortcut: gso The other way around is to type site:opensuse.org <Enter> and after site reloads, save it as a bookmark. When you click on bookmark you will get text "site:opensuse.org" and than add whatever you are looking for. And "our" is actually mediawiki search. The way around is to redirect Tasks to Task, just as Community_Tasks link to Tasks. It would be double redirect that covers 3 expressions that should link to the same page. -- Regards, Rajko.

nice idea :-) thanks.

very nice, I didn't know all that :-)

well, but this is only for task, and this was only an example. thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

Yes, but again it is mediawiki search. Try wikipedia.org with some words and see what they do. I started with word "packages" to cover simple words on opensuse.org, but it is really BIG task, because basically it means to make tens of indexes that will help new users to find what they look for if search fails to find the page. The search returns a lot that has to be manually cleaned to make life of new users easier. With "packages" there is more work ahead, not to mention maintenance, ie. look for word packages in full text search and than add to index. Yesterday I started to collect relevant links for words graphic, imaging, drawing, picture, photo. It is even bigger task, not that much on opensuse, but collecting program names, articles, etc. in Internet is big. I'm have few pages, and that was really just initial search :-) Next to see is good old Wikipedia. They probably have sorted this out long time ago. -- Regards, Rajko.

they do differently, but not really in a good way (IMHO) I added to my own page a link to google based on your remark. It works. But may I use it on the front page? I'm reluctant to do so. not sure. look at "google search" http://fr.opensuse.org/Utilisateur:Jdd_sysop the french wikipedia main page is intersting http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accueil not very fun, but probably effectice jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

In the same form that I see on your page, sure you can. Let me see for google search box, like the one that can be seen on some web pages. http://www.google.com/services/siteflavored.html This demands some consultations with a Core Team. The question is would the Novell like the idea of embedding Google search, than, would Google be happy with it too.

Yes, it is effective. That might be something that will better fit as opensuse.org front page. I'll take idea and see how to include something like this in list_of_proposals. I have feeling that "Accueil-ized" page will be by taste of the majority. BTW I hope that you'll be able to find time to help if the blowfish and me don't get all right :-) My idea is directory like http://dmoz.org, but it is many hands job, and for now it will not work on opensuse.org. Or maybe, to create the page and ask for help? -- Regards, Rajko.

I like the dmoz style, my ideal would be to modify the built-in categories to support something like that. However, I am still trying to figure out how they work. I suspect that the underlying engine would have to be hacked. From the look of the wikimedia site (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help_talk:Category) there is discussion of problems with the categories, but I don't see much evidence of response. --- L Greg Lisle

Google surely :-) Novell i don't know. But I made a test and the box in not compatible with the wiki, so... it needs at least more expertise than I have (or more RTFM)

To be able to have a true Google search box in the wiki, one must add to the skin (for me in MonoBook.php), in the relevant place, the code: <div align="center"> <form method="GET" action="http://www.google.fr/custom"> <!-- <a href="http://www.google.fr/search"> <img src="http://www.google.fr/logos/Logo_40wht.gif" border="0" ALT="Google" align="middle"></a> --> <input type="text" name="q" size="15" maxlength="255" value=""> <input type="submit" name="sa" VALUE="Google Search"> <font face="arial,sans-serif" size="-1"> <input type="hidden" name="sitesearch" value="opensuse.org"> </font> </form> </div> You can see the result on my own mediawiki here: http://dodin.org/mediawiki/index.php/Accueil the Google logo is commented out, for the test. I don't know if Google wil appreciate :-( ij fact I didn't find this on the google site but on my LUG one :-) of course this need *action of the site admin (at the console level) *approval by the chief in fact some times Google _pay_ for such things... the truth is Goggle is very good as a search motor :-) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos
