[opensuse-wiki] Web design consolidation - please comment
Hi, at the moment we have got four main openSUSE webserver http://<LANG>.opensuse.org/ (Wikis) http://build.opensuse.org/ (Build Service) http://download.opensuse.org/ (Download Distribution) http://software.opensuse.org/ (Repositories) and http://www.opensuse.org/ as a splash screen for the wikis. Unfortunately the web servers have no common design (Wikis, Build Service) or no design at all ;-) (Download, Repositories). We would like to harmonize the design of all these web servers, so it is always very clear that one is surfing on an openSUSE page - regardless of what server is visited. We would also like to make http://www.opensuse.org/ the single entry point for all openSUSE web servers, not only for the Wiki. A web design that can be used on all openSUSE servers has to be very flexible. Our designer Robert Lihm has made a proposal that we would like to discuss with you: http://www.suse.de/~fs/opensuse/ This directory contains two mockups (Wiki home page, Wiki content page) and a color palette. We chose the wiki as a base because this is the web server you are probably most familiar with. Nevertheless, this is no final proposal how the wiki should look like in the future (this will be subject of further discussions), but rather a presentation of the concept in a familiar context. So, for now, we would like to discuss the overall concept and not the context or whether the wiki links should be on top or at the bottom of the page ;-)). The proposal basically only consists of different boxes, being the building blocks in a construction set. Such a concept offers us the flexibility we need to use it for all openSUSE servers (this is especially true for the Build Service). So, please tell us whether you like it or not, whether you have got suggestions for improvement, or ... . I like it, yet there is a lot of green used and text in bright orange, does this work for colour-blind (red/green) people? There are just drawn icons on the website, would there be a way to intorduce some kind of background-photo to make the site look less wiki-like? Those rounded edges will be made using background images, right? If border-radius as of CSS3 would work in koqnueror et.al. it would be better, yet that is another matter. We should have more than one splash. It is kind of boring, always the same :-) Now when we know that there is professional designer with us can we expect more activity on design.

Empty space at the top in the middle is something that I don't find as good. There must be something from left side to fill that space. The middle portion with frames around every title looks better. I would only use rounded corners, or top corners rounded and bottom as is, to be in style with the rest of new proposal, but absolutely not abandon them. The color pallete seems to be small. We have a lot of elements that should be highlighted and it will not work well with few colors in present pallete. We should be able to give some identity to different web pages and different content, not only text, but graphic and color too. I guess that you have that in plan. Register/Login looks much better now. Though it can have it's own frame, and than "Getting openSUSE" can go all the way up. Top frames with openSUSE logo and register login should be rounded at the top to mark that one is at the top of the page, and nothing is left out. sorry, I didn't explained why: We are not sure, whether the drop down list can be implemented into the wiki (I will have to research this), so I suggested to include the "classical" language selector as well. However, given the growing number of wikis, we would prefer the drop-down list.

Almost everybody complained about this so far, so this definitely needs improvement.

draft_content.png is fine. I am worried about the three-column layout for the wiki start page. The current layout is much more flexible and offers more space for content in the right-most column. Your draft reminds me of the original wiki design when opensuse.org was launched. It also had a menu-like third (right-most) column which looked great on the mockups and later proved to bee too unflexible for the content that we want to show on the first screen of the first page.

That is what I meant. Even if tail finds place it shouldn't be dominant. Now again, we can think of thematic and occasional elements, on the splash screen and wiki. It is more work for Robert, but I guess that when users see new design it will trigger more interest. ...

:-) Well, I don't like "too many" too, but more colors yes. Present proposal contains 24 elements, where some 3 fits for text, the rest as frame backgrounds. On my monitor I hardly see difference in #FCFCFC, as well as other 2 at 10%, so it will be of little use.

Today I stumbled over color selection problem. I wanted to make template Cleanup more visible, and the logical solution was to use some tone of red. After little experimenting I used this: http://en.opensuse.org/Template:Cleanup We would need some colors that will mark errors and warnings with different color than links to prevent misunderstanding, and of course few levels that will define level of warning. Animation is not popular on my computer and I can remember that few people agree :-) I played with colors in pallete. When I use colors on wiki page every color seems to be stronger than the in the file colorspalette.png (old one)? I laked the samurai :-) but it's probably kept for SLES/SLED. Very soft. It is obvious that our designer has much better monitor than I do. I can hardly see the lines that should separate paragraphs, as well as the frame. As a shape I like it.
I think your monitor is fine :) The lines are very soft. My idea was to make a soft separation and not a hard optical break. A I think, harder line would make more "stress" to a skimmer/reader. But it would make orientation easier. Finally ... it´s a question of taste. I make a mock-up with more present separator lines.

I played with colors in pallete. When I use colors on wiki page every color seems to be stronger than the in the file colorspalette.png (old one)?
The stronger color is the right version. Was my mistake, thank you. Will be updated with the next mock-ups :)
What about color for warnings?
We can use the orange to highlight important things. I think your monitor is fine :) The lines are very soft. My idea was to make a soft separation and not a hard optical break. A I think, harder line would make more "stress" to a skimmer/reader. But it would make orientation easier. Finally ... it´s a question of taste. I make a mock-up with more present separator lines.
Just a bit stronger Robert. Now I really have to look where they are, as well as the frame around.

I would leave orange for some ordinary highlights, and use red as extraordinary measure. I had in mind things that you don't want to be overlooked like actions on a hard disk or filesystem, where wrong command can send all your data in oblivion.

I still think we need a "Getting started" section with links to the most common questions from new users. Someone (cb400f?) suggested the FAQ, but I feel that it's not really what *new* users are after (they will after a week or so but...)

I like the general concept. But I must say I don't care much for the dominant green colour. It reminds a lot of the green colour used in many tango icons. I don't want to mention the word Pascal Bleser usually uses to describe that colour. But I must say I agree with him. Can't we find a more lively green? It lists: * Areas of Documentation * Ways in which to communicate * An extra Tips and Tricks page All of these are already covered in the left column. Having unncessary links to just extra sub-sections of those links on the wiki home page increases clutter, and hence confusion, for new people, I think. Other links I think shouldn't be there at all (in the left column) are: * Home (the site logo or the "wiki" link (a little uncomfortable with naming it that) links to it, anyhow) * Support Database (should just be under Documentation) * Contact (that can be somewhere in the disclaimer at the bottom, surely) I think the whole Participate entry should be deleted and replaced with a link or something similar. But past that: * Tasks/Jobs (that should come under Participate) * Team (under Projects) By removing these links I really think we can clear things up a little. Robert did his part of the job as designer and I like layout. That is the reason to post link in opensuse-project. I have the same comment about green as Martin. It should be more in tone with chameleon.
