However, I strongly think that things must be _simple_. The front page must be organised to follow the mind of the user.
The proposed page IS simple. :-) Compare it to some other pages and it realy is.
* the relevant links to the wiki (sidebar, why split them at the top? nearly no web page uses the very top of the page for that)
Not sure what you are talking about. If you talk about the green boxes, I have seen MANY places that use such a thing. /. comes to mind. I like it.
* the news. can be a little larger than the present size, but the width given on the example seems to me a little too much. this part is not always of a great interest
The issue with the 'news' is that there is not enough of it. 2 of the 3 things on it now are a month old. That does not justify a seperate 'news' box that large. The same with upcoming events and milestones. That should be done much, much shorter. e.g. like the left menu. Although there the whisespace is too much, I think. If there is daily news, then things would be different and more space would be justified.
* the center. Here can be a copy of the download link, because it's enough to look at the statistics to see this if far the most used page.
The Download in general needs an overhawl to go faster to the actual download. Now I need to do (from the frontpage): Donwload, scroll down and read a reading a LOT to know which one is for me. Click on 10.1 and scroll down and read a LOT to know what is for me. Ver frustrating to click and scroll several times and then I might ending up with 10.2 Alpha, because I did not read properly what was going on.
From the front page, I would like to go to http://en.opensuse.org/Released_Version#Downloads_SUSE_Linux_10.1 in one step. No extra clicking, no extra reading, no extra scrolling.
May be we can use also this privileged part to show a "page of the month", link to a part of the wiki (different from month to month)? but I'm short on ideas for this one :-(
