Hi,
two weeks ago I promised to get more involved into the front page discussion. In order to have something to start with, I made a proposal that tries to bring the suggestions mentioned at http://en.opensuse.org/Frontpage_redesign/List_of_Proposal_Pages together:
Splash screen for www.opensuse.org: http://www.suse.de/~fs/opensuse/splash.html
I don't like it. See below.
Home page for en.opensuse.org: http://www.suse.de/~fs/opensuse/home.html
Please note that these pages have not been optimized for different browsers, yet - I have developed them on Firefox, so they are "Best viewed with Firefox" ;-)
Some explanations:
Splash screen: It's intended to resemble the 10.1 installation boot screen. The background image is courtesy of Jakub Steiner (thanks a lot).
I don't like the idea of a splash screen. I still believe that first a cookie must deal with the language. If that is not available then the browser and if that fails, then go to the en page. If anything, then "Wikipedia Like Front Page". However the moment you get to en.* or any other language, you can select it there as well, so that page would be not needed.
Home page: I picked up jdd's suggestion to simplify the navigation. The top navigation now is entirely dedicated to one topic - "Participation" in my proposal.
I liked http://www.suse.de/~fs/opensuse/home.html very much. It might need a bit of finetuning¹, but the general idea is very good.
Please let me know what you think.
BTW: Please note that changes within the content area only affect the home page. Changes to top nav, left nav and footer affect all wiki pages.
On the top bar I would change the order to have a more stuctured meaning. Communicate, Participate, Teams, Tasks, Projects. Disadvantage is when I look at it in 1024x786 instead of my normal 800x1600, I don't see the documentation at the right,
Every link that is present on the front page (regardless where it is) also affects the wikis in other languages - it is my belief that the pages that are linked to from the homepage should be part of "must be translated" set.
Yes. ¹Some things I would do differently: 1. A green border around the left menublock as well. 2) Put the header box, the p box and the box with the links (e.g. Getting openSUSE, the text and the links) in one box. Easier to move around to another place. The same for the 'News and dates' 'Tips and Tricks' and so on. 3) Looks as if the buttons at the top are a pixel or so larger than the gray background. 4) The font in the menu's is too small compared with the rest. As if it ain't importand. Use either a smaller font everywhere or a larger in the menu. -- The whole principle [of censorship] is wrong.
