[opensuse-virtual] Bug (Maybe?) with finding Xen Guest installation repository

Hello List! Because with a friend's Ubuntu machine I can do a similar creation, I think it's now maybe a bug. In Xen or OpenSuse I don't understand. I have also read that installing Fedora and Redhat in this method is also successfull. I have installed the very newest OpenSuse Version11 from the Factory Repository. It uses a quite new Xen Hypervisor, "xen-3.2.1_16881_04-2" And I have started the machine in the Xen Kernel uname -a Linux server 2.6.25.4-8-xen #1 SMP 2008-05-26 15:23:05 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Now I attempt to create a Guest domain, also OpenSuse. I am using the method with xm create The Test-configuration is the most simple I can make. Could not find the OpenSuse Repository. Activating manual setup program. Following the advise I have read I check all the entries in the Manual Linurc dialogue. When continuing, I see again another "Red" Error message, No Repository Found. It appears not to use corectly the Guest's interface, eth0? But I see in the Domain 0 the interface is added at the bridge, brctl show bridge name bridge id STP enabled interfaces xenTEST 8000.00504300415e no peth0 vifTEST Is it a bug? [opensuse-virtual] thinking about consolidating

Guys, I'm slowly beginning to consider a consolidation of several small-to-medium sized Intel servers onto one large box - maybe a Sun Fire. The idea would be to move my current physical servers on to virtual servers running on a highly reliable system. I've currently got a total of 16 CPUs and roughly 24Gb RAM. These systems are not maxed out at all, although I do have one database system on an 8-CPU box running pretty hot. The advantages of moving to a single box are obvious - less power, less cooling and less space needed. I was thinking about a 4 x quad core Xeons with 16 or 24Gb RAM. What are the disadvantages of such a consolidation? One seems to be that any hardware upgrade/replacement means all servers are down, not just one. This could presumably be overcome by having a 2nd box with the same config - can Xen-based virtual systems be easily/quickly migrated from one box to another? Another disadvantage I can see is scalability - with my current setup, it's no big deal adding another 1CPU box, it's only a matter of rack space. That's not quite so easy with one large box instead. [opensuse-virtual] Xen 3.2 and 3.1 host crash when installing Windows 2000 SP4 ?

Hi All, Just did a fresh SLES 10 SP2 install and added Xen 3.2 (with Novell update repository in place).. so this should be fresh and with newest versions. When I try to install a Windows 2000 server the guest setup starts normally right up to the point where the drivers have been loaded and the setup states ' starting windows setup... ' , at this point the Xen host blanks and reboots! I get the guest crashing , but having the host doing a spontaneous reboot does not seem very good. I also had this issue on SLES 10 SP1 and was hoping Xen 3.2 would fix this. The server in question had an AMD X2 processor, but I've also had this on an Intel based Dell Poweredge 1950. Is this a known issue? and any known solutions? Hello List! I have examined the output of the VNC Console, and I see that the LinuxRC program is called. When entering all the data for my Static IP and others, it returns that "No repository found". This same Suse repo can be fully used for a normal non-xen installation. But not for this Domu Guest. Can you help? -- Thank you! [opensuse-virtual] problems installing openvz on opensuse 10.3

Hi all, I've got some problems installing openVZ and would be very grateful, if anyone could help me further. I'll try to provide the necessary information, but as I don't know, what might be needed, please tell me if you need more input: I'm running opensuse 10.3 on my computer and tried to install openvz. I've downloaded the package kernel-ovz-2.6.16.46_027test011-0.12.i686.rpm from the openvz homepage. Next I started the installation via rpm -ivh, checked the GRUB-loader /boot/grub/menu-lst and rebooted. The entry was shown and selectable but the kernel didn't boot. Later I found another package at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/openvz/SUSE_Linux_10.1/ but the installation didn't work either. I remove the silent entry from GRUB and saw, that both kernels seemed not to be able to find the disk - but that is the same as for the normal kernel as well as for the also installed XEN-kernel. My suspect is, that the kernels do not match (please don't laugh, I'm a newbie). One more question, if you don't mind: I'd like to use German keyboard layout, which I implemented in system settings. On physical machines and on VMware machines it works. But in the Xen VMs, the VMs ignore the setting. Instead I have another layout, where 'z' and 'y' is changed - but it's not an american layout, so I don't know which layout is active. At the moment it doesn't harm me, as I'm connecting via PuTTY, but I'd like to know how to get a German layout working? Kind regards Stephan p.s.: the next step is to get a openVZ-system working.
