[PATCH 0/2] vm-dump-metrics: Fix segmentation fault and exit code

This two patches fix a segfault that happens in vm-dump-metrics if you run it on a machine that doesn't have a metrics disk (eg. from the host instead of from the guest). Also makes vm-dump-metrics return status code of 1 on failure. [PATCH 0/7] Lots of cleanups, don't run the daemon as root, and connect to libvirt readonly

This patch series is basically a lot of cleanups and should also enhance the security of vhostmd. We should allow administrators to run the daemon as root, we should always connect to libvirt readonly, and we should ensure that the libvirt URI is specified. (Libvirt's heuristics where it tries to guess the default hypervisor are suspect so don't rely on them). [PATCH] Allow xenstore dependency to be removed

This patch lets you compile vhostmd without xenstore support in the main daemon. Our use-case is for platforms where Xen isn't available. The default is the same as currently - ie. xenstore is compiled in. To disable xenstore, the packager would compile with: ./configure --without-xenstore (this also disables xenstore in the domU tool as before). "Memory leak" fixed

vhostmd in the default configuration runs "virsh dominfo 0", which only makes sense for Xen. For other hypervisors, it causes libvirtd to return an error message. Unfortunately, this provokes a very bad memory leak in libvirtd: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=528162 You just need a more recent version of libvirtd which includes the following commit: http://libvirt.org/git/?p=libvirt.git;a=commit;h=c6f1459eb998619ab21a92d9bb… With the latest libvirt, I'm not able to make either vhostmd or libvirt(d) leak memory, but I'm going to run it all overnight just to make sure. Making releases?

Can we make releases of vhostmd, or rather, how do we make releases? It sort of seems like gitorious offers a way to create tarballs from either the head or tags, but I couldn't see how to actually do it. Failing that, I guess we'd need to find alternate hosting for the tarballs. Also I left vhostmd running overnight and it crashed my machine, apparently out of memory error. I'm not sure if this is a slow leak in vhostmd or in something else (libvirtd maybe) but I'm looking into it today. [PATCH] Open metrics disk with O_DIRECT.

In the guest, we really need to open the metrics disk with the O_DIRECT option. Otherwise the guest kernel will cache arbitrary parts of the disk, and won't notice when the host updates it. Now the problem with O_DIRECT is it introduces undetermined restrictions on how you can read from the underlying device. In particular, all read(2) calls must be made with: (a) Buffer must be aligned to a block size. (b) Current file offset must be aligned to a block size. (c) Requested read size must be a multiple of block size. That's quite difficult, but there's a further restriction: There's no reliable way to know what the "block size" is! This patch changes the reads to use O_DIRECT and satisfies the alignment restrictions above, except that we choose an arbitrary block size (64K) which is hopefully large enough to cover any real cases. (Note that this also implies that the minimum size of the metrics disk will be 64K -- currently the default is 256K so we're OK unless a sysadmin reduces the default). [PATCH] Make the default disk be /dev/shm/vhostmd0.

[Here are three patches which I committed already (by accident). I'm posting them for review instead here. If there are problems we can revert or amend what was committed.] This first patch changes the default exported disk to be /dev/shm/vhostmd0 (instead of /dev/shm/vhostmd/disk0). Having the intermediate vhostmd directory is problematic because there is no good place to change the permissions on this directory, and if the permissions aren't made more permissive that the default then libvirt will fail to start KVM-based domains.
