[opensuse] Kudos to the 15.0 devs and those who made kde3 possible (both then and now)
For those that don't check, You have a full kde3 build available for Leap 15.0. It works brilliantly. Special thanks to all that made it possible. I can't tell you how rewarding it is to have a full featured desktop that just works. No distractions, no worry about something not working correctly, no worry about having to collect data and file bug-reports, just working. Kudos for continuing to make that option available. For machines with limited RAM, there is no better desktop that provides as much, fully up and running with konqueror, kwrite and konsole in a total of 215M (that includes leap/everything) http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_Leap_15.0 I have my plasma install, as well as fluxbox and i3, but by far, kde3 is the favorite. -- David C. So, do we just set up a repository in Yast and install from that? I also much prefer KDE3 and find that KDE4 & plasma is not ready for prime time. With 15.0, I find I have to frequently restart plasma, to get things working properly again. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Can be simple as saving <http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_Leap_15.0/KDE:KDE3.repo> to /etc/zypp/repos.d/, doing zypper ref or starting yast2 sw_single, and install away. -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Yes, When you install kdegraphics-pdf and it complains nothing provide pdftools_any, just ignore it and choose option 2 [ ] break. kpdf will work fine, that is a stray dependency issue that has popped up (there is no pdftools_any package at all, anywhere). I just added the repo as a normal repo, then go to "Patterns" in Yast and select KDE3. (you can also just filter by Repositories and select what you want from the repo it self, but I generally cross-check with the "Pattern" to make sure I haven't missed anything like kdebase3-session or kdebase3-workspace, etc... I set it up within fluxbox. It took about 10 minutes. Then exited fluxbox, check the lighdm list of desktop sessions, and chose KDE3 and presto -- up and running. Don't forget the kde3-kwinstyle-crystal window decorations (a bit of configurable eye-candy :) -- David C. With that endorsement I had to try it out. It's FAST. Wow. Yes, this is a know issue with a simple work around -- but I can't recall off the top of my head exactly how to fix it. It was discussed here or on the Trinity list in the past year. Let me search and see what I can find. I think it has to do with one of the plasma configs and the fact that suse include plasma libs when kdm is installed. I need to have a handy answer for this anyway. Yes -- you talk about fast! on my SSD, I can go from powered off to full KDE3 desktop in 12 seconds flat. Desktop response in instantaneous. Love it :) The only issue I have had to solve is with SSH (not kde3 specifically), but for some projects, I would have 40+ source files open in kate from remote hosts, SSH now throttles startup connections, but provides the sshd_config MaxStartups option that allows you to set the allowable number of startups to avoid any problems. I also add a kdm3.service (/usr/lib/systemd/system/kdm3.service) [Unit] Description=KDE3 Display Manager After=systemd-user-sessions.service [Service] ExecStart=/opt/kde3/bin/kdm [Install] Alias=display-manager.service Just create the file and save it as /usr/lib/systemd/system/kdm3.service. Then do # systemctl daemon reload (to have systemd re-read its services files) Then just enable the service: # systemctl enable kdm3 (disable any other DM and then on next boot, kdm is ready to go -- and I have some killer themes for it -- moodin engine :) -- David C. ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc Per, From what I can read the problem is the plasma panel is being started which reads it's config and creates the panel on the current desktop. I will have to load my drive with plasma on it to figure out what causes it to launch and where to turn it off. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that something in your current /usr/lib/systemd/system/display-manager.service is launching parts of plasma by default. Hopefully someone more familiar with opensuse plasma startup can chime in and help us out. -- David C. That was for leap 42.3, sorry. BR,
Thank you Mark! I remember the discussion, but could not remember where or when, but I knew it was recently discussed. Yes, this is a very OLD issue. I recall the same problems with the xdg/autostart folder just as soon as KDE 4.0.4 was released with 11.0 and all the crap that appeared in the systemwide autostart folder. I must have nuked the contents of that folder 30 times over the years, but didn't put 2+2 together that plasma would do the same thing. Your google foo runs strong friend. I looked last night, but without success. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well, I made friends with update-alternatives for the default-displaymanager in 15 to set kdm3 as the default. The only caveat is if you already have a default-display manager, then you don't need the --install option, you need the --set option, e.g. # update-alternatives --set default-displaymanager /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/kdm3 Then a logout/login and kdm3 was the default and I had the advanced shutdown options in the rt-click context menu :p -- David C. Yup, that's very nice. I like having the hostname back on the menu, been trying to get it working with sddm too. I guess any continued kde3 discussions are a little bit OT here?
