[opensuse] Re: How To: openSUSe 11.2 and Wireless on HP 6730s
Hi All,
I give up as time is my enemy :-) Does anybody know about a USB
Wireless adaptor that works out of the box with openSUSE 11.2 by any
chance?
I need to order it, get it delivered, then configured and run off to
Brainshare Amsterdam by next Monday :-)
Best,
Jimmy

I have a Belkin 54g USB Network Adapter, but had to add rt73usb driver as suggested by YaST2. Did entire setup with YaST2, works fine after. Note that I had a wired connection in use when I did the install/setup. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for steeping in Rares. Well, it's a Broadcom. I used *all* the recipes that our Mates here gave me since Sunday last. I was connected to Internet by Broadband in order to download what Yast wanted. I spent loads of hours but the wiki of openSUSE must be missing something :-( I reinstalled openSUSe fresh 3 times already. BTW, I have the laptop with me now at work... If there is a miraculous recipe or if someone from Braodwom is reading this and *knows* the ins and outs, I am ready to spend another evening to get it to work :-) Best wishes, Jimmy

I'm not sure if I followed the thread correctly, however, I got tired of trying to get a Windoz Wireless adapter working. So I did some research and found that ZyXEL G-220 V-2 was supposed to work great. IT DID - NO HASSLES - SUSE 11.1 - found it, installed the correct driver and was off and running in less than half and hour (Once I finally figured out my U-Verse gateway security password) Duaine Rares Aioanei wrote:

Really Rares ... we all heard you the first time. Perhaps if people learnt to trim properly, there wouldn't be the need/desire to top post. Allen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
What is a "Windoz Wireless adapter" ? Also, again please do NOT top-post. I bought it at Radio Shack - I believe it was a Linksys - according to the website(s) - all you had to do is load the driver - but after DAYS of playing with it, I quit and bought the ZyXEL.

Also, again please do NOT top-post. My apologies for this. Gmail seem to do just that, brillantly.
BTW, I am still on the case @00:29. yast2 broke down as well as zypper and also needed to do this to repair et al : http://forums.opensuse.org/get-help-here/install-boot-login/438469-yast-zypp... If this Broadcom chip works with openSUSE v 11.1 or earlier, maybe, I should start fresh from an earlier version? Jimmy, wouldn't be easier to spend half an hour making your internal wi-fi work?
Unless he's a wizard, my guess is it will take a lot more than half an hour if it doesn't already work. But it depends. I believe more details are necessary if it's going to work, and I'd be surprised if things work "out of the box" with a USB adapter, as in just plugging it in and have things work straight off. For instance, cleaning out the old attempts might be a good idea. I haven't seen any report about how far you got it to work, but I may have just overlooked it. Perhaps this info might help, but again, it depends (e. g. on whether you're using DHCP, WPA2, Networkmanager/Knetworkmanager or not etc.): http://forums.opensuse.org/install-boot-login/430738-wireless-connection-dis... Check for the bits about /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-wlan0 and the example for a correct such file. Especially check for Knurpht's mention about "AUTH_MODE cannot be "open" with WPA/WPA2." This did it for me on a built-in wifi, didn't get it to work with a D-link USB dongle (sorry, can't remember the name ATM). You might also want to try if switching to wicd (http://wicd.sourceforge.net/) helps solve the problem. There's at least one person on this list who reportedly always got wireless to work even on laptops. Perhaps he's got useful info to contribute with. If not, there's some info in the list archives.
