-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, Suddenly, mouse wheel doesn't work. It was working, and suddenly it stopped working. This one is a trackball. I connected at the same time a second mouse, cheapo, and it works fine.
Hardware broke down. I connected to laptop, and same symptoms :-/ I didn't test that before because I thought it would be impossible. Any suggestion for a new trackball, with cable? -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.4 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Got it partially working, it is fluff in the wheel. Usually these things give "warnings", not fail suddenly. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.4 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Failed again, this time with "warning". It would move down the window, but not up. https://photos.app.goo.gl/7v44kwGA9Rj4t8QK9 This time I found a new place where the fluff was hiding, not visible initially. I could not find fluff elsewhere. Each time I try this, I find a new place. The little wheel can be pulled up, and the wheel disassembled almost entirely and cleaned completely. The problem is placing them, and two springs, back in the correct place. Amazing the amount of fluff I found there. To clean under the optical sensors, I used a bit of paper cut from a Postit note. I now think I should have used the sticky part. And all the time, the trackball had to be connected to see if it worked. Saved a hundred euros or so, I'm happy :-) -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. In my experience - I've had at least four Logitech trackballs over the last 25 years - Logitech trackballs are crap. With my regular 8-10 hour daily office use maybe followed by some gaming, they have either worn out or just died. I have had one or two replaced on warranty within the first year, only for it to wear out within a year again. What is wrong with yours I can't say, I'm only sharing my experience. I have long since switched to a Kensington trackball, "Expert Mouse". Fluff inside the wheel, difficult to remove. I don't remember when was the previous time when this happened; a few years back, I'm sure. I must write a label under the mouse. Wrote one on Gnote meanwhile.

The link can not be opened. It asks where I live: Canada, USA, Mexico, and then doesn't produce your product page. Ah, ok, I have to hit back and then I see your trackball. It is very similar to mine, except I don't have the two tiny buttons.

Usually the ball is easy to just pop out of the holder. It certainly was in the Marble FX and the M575, and the Kensington too.

The ball is easy. Scroll wheels are much harder. I have the same issue with a Logitech gamer's mouse I bought recently, 2nd hand. Scrolling is erratic and starts in the wrong direction. There are many people complaining in fora all over the web, but only a very few who isolated it: fluff in the wheel. Cleaning requires complete disassembly. So far, I've not had the time: it's cheaper to switch to a working (but inferior) mouse. :-/ -- Liam Proven ~ Profile: https://about.me/liamproven Email: lproven@cix.co.uk ~ gMail/gTalk/FB: lproven@gmail.com Twitter/LinkedIn: lproven ~ Skype: liamproven UK: (+44) 7939-087884 ~ Czech [+ WhatsApp/Telegram/Signal]: (+420) 702-829-053

Hmm, I don't recall even trying to clean any wheels - maybe those trackballs just didn't last long enough. The Kensington has a scroll "ring", the only way to clean is with a toothbrush.

Still does not make sense to me. For me, the trackball has to rest on a solid surface that also supports my wrist. I was introduced to trackballs in 1965 and I never liked them, especially the ones where there's a small ball for the thumb. For my uncoordinated self, I find it easier to control the cursor with a traditional mouse. I'm also weird in that I'm right-handed, but use my left hand for the mouse. I remember when I first started using a GUI and mouse with SunOS around 1986, I figured that since my right hand was used more to hit the "Enter" key, I might as well split the workload and let my left command the mouse. I don't like touchpads either. Regards, Lew

I got really introduced around 1995 at the job. We installed computers in a 19 inch rack, and in engine workshops, sometimes on tables. Mice failed when used by mechanics with greasy hands, and space was tight anyway. So our friendly computer vendor told me to try trackballs. A Logitech Marble. Very expensive thing at the time, but it worked. It really did, because it had no wheels moved by the ball, but instead the ball had painted dots and a sensor directly read them. It always worked. For the racks we found a tiny keyboard with encrusted trackball. Probably an industrial keyboard, really expensive thing. So, when I had a chance, I got a trackball for myself during a trip to Canada, much cheaper. That one still works. In the current incumbent, it is the wheel that fails, and Liam confirms that I am not alone. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from Elesar, using openSUSE Leap 15.4)

Hmm, I guess we're still vaguely on-topic :-) Myself, I switched to trackball in the late 90s and I use left or right hand. I think it depends a lot on what you do - if it involves a lot of work with the mouse, my wrist often hurts after a long day. I've never had that with the trackball.
I don't like touchpads either.
I'm no big fan either, but in the situations where I use the laptop, I usually don't want to faff with the mouse or I don't have the space for one, e.g. working whilst riding a train. A necessary (small) evil. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (6.6°C) Member, openSUSE Heroes (2016 - present) We're hiring - https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Heroes

At home my computers are so far from my working position that wireless is the only practical way. It's either that or USB extender cables.
Fluff inside the wheel, difficult to remove.
I don't remember when was the previous time when this happened; a few years back, I'm sure. I must write a label under the mouse. Wrote one on Gnote meanwhile.
I have long since switched to a Kensington trackball, "Expert Mouse". I think it was recommended by someone here on the list.
This?

Doesn't look confortable.
I have been using this Logitech trackball for years

The link can not be opened. It asks where I live: Canada, USA, Mexico, and then doesn't produce your product page. Ah, ok, I have to hit back and then I see your trackball. It is very similar to mine, except I don't have the two tiny buttons.
Both wireless and wired units. Unless you use a hammer on one I have had no issues.
I use two at home everyday and two more at the office in Wichita. Also have one to travel with for my laptop.
Mine works so well that when it fails like this I have forgotten what's the problem, previous time was years before...

Never had an issue with the scroll wheel. Have to take the ball out every once in a while for a good cleaning. -- "The dog is a gentleman. I hope to go to his heaven, not man's." Mark Twain
