Gurus:
Since I switched from v. 2.0.36 to v. 2.2.4 and later 2.2.5, I have not been able to get the module parport_pc.o to load. Modules lp.o and parport.o load, but not parport_pc which appears to be critical to he device functioning. in the messages I get /lib/modules/2.2.5/misc/parport_pc.o: init_module: Device or resource busy. I tried to change address, ie. io=0x278 to 0x378, in the conf modules, both with and without an irq declaration. I don't have the knowledge to research this; I'm pissed I din't have use of a very necessary part of my computer.
Any help will be appreciated. I hope SuSE addresses such problems, I like the rest of their product.
Dick
Hello Dick, I don't mean to be confrontational, but SuSE really has nothing to do with the ability or inability of the kernel you downloaded and built to compile the kernel modules you downloaded and built. SuSE has no control over the releases on ftp.kernel.org. If you choose to update the kernel yourself, then you have to realize that you may encounter some difficulty in doing so. In my conf.modules, I have things set up like so: alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc options parport_pc io=0x378 irq=none, none This might be a good place to start. Additionally, if you want your system to work properly with a current 2.2 kernel, you should start with the set of update RPMs on ftp.suse.com under /pub/SuSE-Linux/suse_update/SuSE-6.0/kernel. Read the README.eng and go from there.
