Old news. Slashdot had it months ago. Vista Starter had this too, but it wasn't released in America. Microsoft is aiming it towards netbooks. While I agree off-topic posts are generally uninteresting and out of place, only if a thread becomes a real problem due to significant S/N ratio, or has real offensive content, maybe then it's time to play nanny and tell other people how to behave, but I would say not until then. If you and anyone else who jumps to tell other people what to do are doing so for the sake of the list and not for the sake of your selves, then you should probably have an idea what everyone else feels before speaking in their name. To that end, here's how one member of that group feels: While the various OT complaints are technically valid, I find the commands to use a list no one reads and other net nanny posts more offensive to read than most of the off topic posts themselves. a) The original "offense" is usually at least something in a positive mood, however trivially/technically misguided, while the rebuff is by definition always a negative, and is ALSO technically just as off-topic as the opriginal "offense". b) The wrist-slap almost always generates far more off topic posts in the form of ensuing arguments, which this very post of mine is a perfect example, than the original "offense". c) The ensuing argument is always rather negative, it's an argument, it even devolves into personal insults fairly often, while the original offense usually isn't actually offensive in any way other than being uninteresting or having it's interest be unrelated or only weakly related to openSUSE. I always would rather deal with uninteresting threads by simply not participating in them, and only in the most extreme cases by telling anyone else what to do. (note the lack of commands even in this post) In fact, one wonders why someone who is so concerned with polluting the list with impure thoughts not related to openSUSE would have posted a message about mail list etiquette to a mail list that isn't about mail list etiquette instead of directly to the "offender". I didn't find one shred of interesting (or uninteresting for that matter) content about openSUSE in your own post. -- bkw -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

But why? It's nonsense information. It's simply spamming this list which is about...wait for it...openSUSE linux..... We all do our fair share of MS bashing, but that is not what this list is about. The Starter Edition of Vista/7 is nothing new. It always had this limitation. You won't see it in retail stores or are on a new shiny desktop on Best Buy or Staples shelves. Now had you used the GO! Linux! subject without the OT and the message of your email was something cool, like it's been integrated into the new space shuttle or some cool innovated vehicle, you wouldn't be flamed like this. MS is not pressuring anyone into buying the pricer version with Starter Edition. It will be geared to 3rd world countries, like Vista SE was, and netbooks. Can this topic die now? -- Michael S. GEESH! LET IT GO ALREADY! An OT once in awhile don't hurt if NOBODY replies to KEEP IT GOING. The people just had to reply, probably, need to "sweep their own doorstep". FYI: With a different line, I sent this to the piano tech list because most of them use Windows. And some have already posted OT complaints about the crappyness of VISTA. Don't they only sell those editions only in so called "third world" countries? I remember a similar edition of Windows XP -- it could only support up to X MB of ram and X GB hard drive (something along the lines of 128mb / 40GB... IIRC) Either way Windows has a built in limit of the number of programs it can run -- or even how long you can go without reinstalling (and then after X reinstalls it tells you "you have activated too many time" and asks you to enter a new serial number).
