SuSE FTP and .iso images?
Hi, Is it possible to make an installation CD set by burning the files from the FTP site to CD? I have tried to just burn the needed files to CD, but that did not work. I know I can make an FTP install floppy set which allows for network installation, but I wanted to make a hard copy and install form that. If someone could point me to some documentation on doing this I would appreciate it. All documentation I have seen is for network installs, and why .iso images are not uploaded to the ftp (except for sparc's), but nothing on the necessary files to create installation CD's. $80 a year for the newest version is getting too expensive. Thanks, jeric

Here we go again... ;) Seriously though, is there a LUG (Linux User Group) in you area? This is a good way to find other SuSE users who can afford the $80. Perhaps just buy the upgrade version for cheaper? Finding someone with a copy or helping fund the best Linux distro out there with your own money are the only ways you're going to get the .iso's... Oh, please. Maybe you prefer $179 for Red Hat Pro, or $299 for Windows XP Pro? Last year, I added up all the software I run from my $80 SuSE box and checked the prices for equivalent commerical software at CDW. It would cost me about US $14,000 to replace my linux software on 2 laptops and a home server. There are also many distros you can download and burn. I think the SuSE engineering effort is worth every penny. Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MCSE, N+ Got spam? Get spastic http://spastic.sourceforge.net

Yes, I'll format your email for you. Please wrap the text so that it's readable...72-78 characters. You can buy the upgrade version every single time you buy a new version if you like. I mean it's $49.95 for the upgrade (pro w/ out all the books and support) and this would be about $150.00 a year which is much cheaper then any other platform. You don't have to do every version either. You could do 8.0 then 8.2 then 8.4 then 9.0 and be perfectly happy. I'm still running 7.2 at work and I went from 7.1 to 7.3 at home. You do not have to upgrade every single time. But I will also say that I don't think that SuSE should have to put .iso's up or much worry about "giving everyone a free beer". They are a business ..in business to make money. They do more then enough to help the community and if people don't like this sad fact of life..then it's all open source and can be put together when and how it suites the person. *shrug* Same ole stuff..everytime there is a new release. I think SuSE could do a release once a year and that would be to much for people. -=Ben --=====-----=====-- mailto:ben@whack.org --=====-- If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little. -GC --=====-----=====--
Yes, well, I guess I have been spoiled by the other distributions, sorry. As a student with no family support $80 is hard to come by, so I was merely asking if it was like many of the other distros which allow this to be done. I did not realize this was such a touchy issue, sorry. You can stop flaming now, thanks. I agree that SuSE does a great job and deserves their money. They are one of the few software companies that I have no quorums about paying for their reasonably priced, and stable product. They are by far my favorite distro, but I am strapped for cash and wanted to test drive the 8.0, so I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask...guess I was wrong, sorry. : -----Original Message----- : From: jeric [mailto:jeric@mmcable.com] : Sent: Tuesday, April 30, 2002 12:23 PM : To: suse-linux-e@suse.com : Subject: [SLE] SuSE FTP and .iso images? : : : Hi, : Is it possible to make an installation CD set by burning : the files from the FTP site to CD? Why is when people get an answer they don't like it's called flaming and when the get an answer they agree with it's the right answer. You don't have to spend $80. Spend $50 once or twice a year. BTW...sorry for coming off as an ass. It's just that everytime SuSE has a release we get tons of "why doesn't SuSE give us their distribution for free via .iso " questions for the 2 months afterwards. After 2+ years since SuSE stopped giving .iso's .. it's become annoying. I didn't mean to be mean... :: ::I agree that SuSE does a great job and deserves their money. My best advice for this is to make the bootdisks and do a network install since you have a cable modem. It's the easiest way. -=Ben --=====-----=====-- mailto:ben@whack.org --=====-- If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little. -GC --=====-----=====--

Too expensive? For all you get, they're practically giving it away. SuSE Professional is an amazing bargain, in my opinion. *************************************************** Powered by SuSE Linux 7.3 Professional KDE 2.2.1 KMail 1.3.1 This is a Microsoft-free computer Bryan S.
