Dear Hackers, I've spent a good portion of this weekend trying to get reported games to run under Transgaming's WineX 2.1 . This is on my home computer which runs 7.1. I have no problem planning Loki games like UT, Descent3, etc, but all of my installs fail. My hardware is a custom 1Ghz Tbird with 512MB of RAM, GeForce 2 MX 400, 30GB HD, and DFI motherboard. I'm running 2.4.16-64GB-SMP(I know I don't need SMP on a uniprocessor) on SuSE 7.1 Professional. The game I want to get going is called Sacrifice. It is one of my favorites and I just purchased a copy. This game has a 4/5 rating from the support forums off transgaming's website. I've tired to install Quicktime(latest version), M$ Golf (from 1993), Mechwarrior 4 demo. No luck on any of them. I've got some e-mail into them, but haven't heard back from them yet. Any help would be appreciated. BTW, I've tired the two previous versions of WineX 2.0 & 1.0, but no luck. Turning on debugging for the product is not practical(too many messages and too much of a performance hit). Jonathan Paul Cowherd Linux and Java Administrator Genscape, Inc. Hence why I cancelled my supscription to transgaming. I would however suggest getting the lastest (or second lastest - aka more stable) cvs from the WineHQ links for the OpenGL patch. I found it to be much better than the Transgaming setup. The only thing that I preferred in the Transgaming version was that it automatically displays in fullscreen. The generic Wine with the OpenGL patch will display almost full screen, meaning the it plays in full size of the screen but with a windowed frame. I'm sure if I tweaked it some more that one might be able to figure out how to get the true Full Screen to display. Give the OpenGL patch a try in the default Wine install from SuSE. HTH, Good luck. Curtis

Well, up until yesterday, I would have agreed with Curtis. But having seen my son's Warcraft 3 running fine under Linux, and playing against a Windows machine on the local network, I'm pretty impressed - as Dr Johnson said about the dog, the surprising thing is not that it is done badly, but that it is done at all. The forums at Transgaming show that a lot of people are having "issues", but many others are having success. So it's perhaps a matter of ticking things off and crossing your fingers. I know there are all sorts of questions about whether running Windows games under Wine is bad for Linux desktop adoption. I used to think it was, but judging by the reactions of my son's companions today it is quite the opposite. Those who hadn't heard of Linux were interested in knowing more about it, and those who had were just interested in the game. IANAE (I am not an expert), but check: - do you have 3D turned on OK, and have your drivers had whatever sorting out we all know nVidia drivers need - they're like black magic to me, and I doubt I will ever buy an nVidia card again; - do you have a symbolic link for /usr/lib/libGL.so from /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 - it was this one thing that allowed WC3 to run on my setup; - does the install proceed OK - it's not clear from the above whether you get even this far; - what sort of response do you get when you try to run the game - have you tried winex <nameofgame> -opengl as an alternative; - try moving any cutscenes out of the way temporarily (rename the directory), so that they don't play. This probably isn't much help to you, I'm afraid, but I too had given up Transgaming as a valiant but pointless exercise until yesterday. Best wishes Kevin
