Sean Akers@ROMAX 31/10/2000 14:57 I'm about to set up a new Linux server at work using SuSE 7.0. I was thinking of using Reiser FS rather than ext2. However, I realize that this is a fairly new file system and was wondering whether it is OK for production use. Are there any limitations or problems with using this file system ? It would certainly be nice not to have to worry about power failures and potential loss of data. Lilo if you're using it. You will need to set the notail option on / . The new version of lilo released a week or two ago claims notail isn't needed anymore but it also needs a newer version of Reiser. But notail isn't a real problem. How hard is it to add six letters to one file once? The following limitations apply: o no quota support (yet) o dump does not work (yet) o kernel based NFS is not very stable yet Apart from that, it is pretty usable: [grimmer@xxx grimmer]$ mount | grep reiserfs /dev/rd/c0d1p3 on / type reiserfs (rw) /dev/wrk/wrk on /work type reiserfs (rw) [grimmer@xxx grimmer]$ df -h / /work Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/rd/c0d1p3 8.0G 3.0G 5.0G 37% / /dev/wrk/wrk 240G 224G 16G 93% /work [grimmer@yyy grimmer]$ mount | grep reiserfs /dev/home/home on /real-home type reiserfs (rw,noatime) [grimmer@yyy grimmer]$ df -h /real-home/ Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/home/home 103G 83G 20G 80% /real-home [grimmer@zzz grimmer]$ mount | grep reiserfs /dev/sda3 on / type reiserfs (rw) /dev/sda4 on /schnell type reiserfs (rw) [grimmer@zzz grimmer]$ df -h / /schnell Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 2.0G 1.3G 687M 66% / /dev/sda4 341G 267G 74G 78% /schnell [grimmer@vvv grimmer]$ mount | grep reiserfs /dev/sda3 on / type reiserfs (rw) /dev/dist/dist on /dist type reiserfs (rw,noatime) [grimmer@vvv grimmer]$ df -h / /dist Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 3.7G 1.2G 2.4G 33% / /dev/dist/dist 326G 160G 166G 49% /dist As you can see, we use it quite intesively :) Bye, LenZ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer SuSE GmbH mailto:grimmer@suse.de Schanzaeckerstr. 10 http://www.suse.de/~grimmer/ 90443 Nuernberg, Germany That was then, this is now. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
Hi, You forgot to mention, it doesn't support files >=2G, which ext2 does do :-) -tosi On Tue, Oct 31, 2000 at 04:10:33PM +0100, Lenz Grimmer wrote:
