GRUB and booting from second harddrive
Hi, I would like to setup my GRUB to boot from a second harddrive. Is this possible? Can it be done from YAST? How? Since I am doing this on a laptop is it possible for the second harddrive to be on a USB port? I already have the disk drive, case and USB cable. I don't have all the answers for you, but grub, at least, has to be on the master drive, a bootable floppy, or a bootable cd/dvd. You have more flexibility about where the second stage image is, and where the root filesystem is located. As for having the root filesystem on a USB drive, that might be possible, but I would think not until after the kernel is loaded so the system has access to USB devices. HTH. Mark

There is some flexibility of your BIOS will allow it. I had a computer on which the IDE drive refused to be anything but /dev/hdb Didn't matter how I reconfigured the jumpers. Then when I put another drive in the box (SATA) it because the first drive as far as the BIOS was concerned and that's what the BIOS wanted to boot. By telling the BIOS to boot from the (now) #2 drive, I didn't have to mess with any MBR and was able to boot from the 2nd drive. I don't think you'll have any luck trying to boot from a USB drive but I've never had the problem...

Hello, If your computer is able as mine, to boot from a USB drive, you can install GRUB on the MBR of this drive. It works for me. Michel.
