[opensuse] sane question
Hello SuSE people, Bought a new Epson all-in-one. Stylus CX9400F, Trying to install the scanner. Had to go and get the iscan package for it. Installed the package but Yast does not pick up the driver, In following the install how-to it states that "Sane 1.0.3" or later must be installed for it to work. I am running 10.3, I do not have a "sane 1.0.3" installed. I do have a sane-backends 1.0.19 installed. Back in 10.0 there was a plain "sane" package and it included sane-backends and other stuff. Checking on the sane download page I don't find a plain "sane" package except for the previously mentioned one in 10.0. Plenty of backends, frontends, other packages. I've spent hours on Google and prowling the vaarious sane pages. So, my question is : is sane a separate package from sane-backends that has something in it that is required for iscan other than sane-backends? No, You've lost me Patrick. Guide the old guy here a little bit please. It is my understanding that sane-backends is a collection of drivers for many and various manufacturers. Isn't that the list that shows up in Yast when you try to edit or add a scanner. Probably doesn't matterr anyway because my scanner doesn't show up in that list. Remember, I don't have a sane.####.rpm in 10.3 and you probably do not in your new 11.0 either. "sane-backends", /usr/share/doc/packages/sane/sane-backends/.... in 10.1 (which I am still on until I have a 11.0 dvd) these files are included in the sane rpm, sane-1.0.18-0.pm.2 from info below, appears there is a "sane-backends" package for 10.3

Add the following repository and install the iscan-free from there. http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/jsmeix/openSUSE_10.3/ as well as any the sane or any other needed. Thanks for trying Joe. Doesn't work. Conflicts with proprietary-drivers and Iscan itself, Removed those and it installed but still did not work, Tried to reinstall the others and they conflicted with iscan-free, So uninstalled iscan-free and reinstalled iscan. Do you know what is in the iscan-free rpm? What it does? Turned the machine off unplugged the usb cable, turned the machine on again and made sure that yast didn't see the scanner. Plugged the scanner usb port back in again and yast found it, properly identified it and showed it at it's usb address. Should be properly configured, but none of the scanner programs seem to find it, including the iscan program itself. Wonder if it has something to do with the usb address? Very frustrating. In the openSUSE RPMs all scanner drivers are disabled by default. AFAIR therefore the sane-programs won't find any scanners until you've run Yast to detect the scanner. I might be wrong there, so. Check http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/jsmeix/openSUSE_10.3/repodat... It appears some scanners need firmware to work. The link above describes which scanners they are (I no longer remember what scanner you are working with). Sane was renamed sane-backends, so if iscan complains, it is because it was built before the name change (and probably means it is a pretty old package). You may need to check http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/scan/DL1.do for a newer package that should work.

Thanks Joe, Wherever did you find that URL? I have been searching for many hours about this problem. Anyway, it answered many of my questions, but not a cure. Johannes made a list of the scanners that would not work with iscan-free and another that needed firmware. My scanner is not on either but I guess the lists could be too old. The scanner I am trying to set up is an Epson Stylus CX9400F. It is an all-in-one. I downloaded the Iscan package for this specific scanner from Avasys. Guess it's time to harass Epson. Or, maybe I got a defective brand-new scanner? Again thanks anyway. If you come up with any new ideas please yell. Wish Johannes would pick up this thread. No, it is not old. You have an all-in-one. There are drivers for those at the left of the link above, but maybe this will help. http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/spc/DL2.do The y do have 32 bit drivers for that AIO. As I thought, they are old drivers (2006), so they may not work without some fiddling, especially with udev.

The "hotplug" mechanism has changed a lot since 2006. I assume you have chosen the epkowa backend. I would check /var/log/messages when you plug it in. You would probably need a udev rule to assign the proper permissions for it to work as a user.
Again thanks anyway. If you come up with any new ideas please yell. Wish Johannes would pick up this thread.

Pin tells me the iscan-firmware is, but not the others. I believe Johannes package would work better for an x86_64 machine, but I am not sure. OK, I will do that. Maybe try using the scanner as root also. Haven't tried that yet. Thanks again Joe, I'll report back after I fiddle with it for awhile.
