Re: [SLE] why is everything about Linux a p*** off
Well said Eric!! I mean windows is slower and it crashes more but...in Linux you can't get anything working without spending days on it I mean...I still have a problem with my scsi emulator. And on windows you get the drivers but on Linux there are no drivers for many things(hp DeskJet 720c, Mustek scanner[LPT1], hp cd-writer plus 9200 [not scsi]..) Pit A. P.S that's why I have a dual boot system(when it has to go fast I take Linux. When it's something like printing colour or burning or scanning I take win98)

Interesting comment. I used to dual boot WinXX too. But, as I became more familiar with Linux I found myself booting the dark side less and less. One day, over a year ago, I realized that I had not booted WinXX for some time... So, I cut the apron strings and reclaimed the WinXX hd space for Linux. I run ADSL through a Cisco 675 router, a Musteck scanner through a 53C810 scsi card, a Zip100 through a 2nd parallel port, a BJC-610 printer on another parallel port, and a 3com905B NIC that connects to the router. SuSE's YaST1 sets them all up. Because I have an older box my sound chips are standard, so I one-click install the OSS drivers. That's the only manual setup I do. When you learn to improvise you will become more proficient. Remember, you are probably still thinking in WinXX, so..... Use the force, Luke! ;-) JLK -- "God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of people that these liberties are a gift of God? Thomas Jefferson - 1781
2 pence worth from a newcomer. I run 7 (previously 6.2) on a dell laptop. I have dial up from home, permanent link from work, remote printers and local printers, no scanner but one of teh win machines has one and I poach the images from her hd when I need them (the joy of having people to do your scanning for you) and I listen to music as I work. This pretty well all worked out of teh box. I use mainly windowmaker with an assortment of apps (mainly emacs, lyx, galeon / mozilla and gnumeric) and have never had such a reliable or flexible computing environment. The only think I cannot do on this machine which I did have under win was 3d acceleration (something funny about the rage lt pro I gather) - which I must confess I do miss a little fro those brief periodds when I require mental shutdown. Life is far easier since I dumped win off the drive Francesco
How about this: I have been polaying commercial games on my box and they are identical to there Windows counterparts (although little faster though). I am lucky to be using the Nvidia card I guess as it was pretty easy to setup and is well supported. Matt On Thursday 01 February 2001 05:08 am, Francesco Scaglioni wrote:

That will slowly change. HP have already announced that they are going to release Printer drivers for Linux. Its goingt o get a lot better as the apps on the platform mature. However I found that in Linux it gives the reins of power over to you to pretty much make the enviroment the way you want it to be too. In Windows, no such luck.
