wireless NIC problem - SuSE 8.0 on a Dell 4000I
I have a laptop with SuSE 8.0, and I'm trying hard to get it up with my Orinco Gold Wireless NIC and the departure from previous versions of SuSE is quite dramatic. Been following advice on the list without success. Can you give me any advice on getting the orinco_cd module to load ? This didn't work for me: ---------------------------------------------------------- Then, change this entry in /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.conf: card "Intersil PRISM2 Reference Design 11Mb/s WLAN Card" manfid 0x0156, 0x0002 bind "orinoco_cs" # bind "prism2_cs" _________________________________________________________ And I get this error when booting: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Setting up hostname 'yodh' done Setting up loopback interfaceifup-wireless: command 'iwconfig lo nick yodh' returned ifup-wireless: Error for wireless request "Set Nickname" (8B1C) : SET failed on device lo ; Operation not supported. ifup-wireless: command 'iwconfig lo essid DeeSign Networks' returned ifup-wireless: Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) : SET failed on device lo ; Operation not supported. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is new to me also :-( Anyone know how to fix the loop back issue ? Thanks, Dee

Did you follow the preceding configuration steps in the unofficial SuSEfaq? susefaq.sourceforge.net Are you sure you have set up your PCMCIA card in YaST2? Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MCSE, N+ Right behind you, I see the millions Got spam? Get spastic http://spastic.sourceforge.net
If you mean the FAQ I mirror that at http://www.wdm.com/susefaq/ , and yes
I did, and yes I created the link in YaST2. I just deleted it trying to
get the loopback problem to stop but that didn't work either.
Any other ideas ?
Thanks,
Dee

Did you mark it as a PCMCIA card in YaST2? It should have created this file for you: /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-pcmcia-0 Do you have any other ethernet cards defined? Yes, I did.

Well, I'm sure you don't want me to walk through the susefaq stuff, so I'll presume you did all the configuration steps in there. Maybe you can show me what you get with "cardctl ident" and the card inserted. Also, any relevant error messages in dmesg. Are you trying to use encryption? Have you flashed the orinoco card with the latest update from agere? Does it work in Windows? Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MCSE, N+ Right behind you, I see the millions Got spam? I followed the FAQ advice already.
Maybe you can show me what you get with "cardctl ident" and the card inserted.
# cardctl ident Socket 0: no product info available Socket 1: product info: "Lucent Technologies", "WaveLAN/IEEE", "Version 01.01", "" manfid: 0x0156, 0x0002 function: 6 (network)
Also, any relevant error messages in dmesg.
Just this one every time I try booting with the PCMCIA card in: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Setting up hostname 'yodh' done Setting up loopback interfaceifup-wireless: command 'iwconfig lo nick yodh' returned ifup-wireless: Error for wireless request "Set Nickname" (8B1C) : SET failed on device lo ; Operation not supported. ifup-wireless: command 'iwconfig lo essid DeeSign Networks' returned ifup-wireless: Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) : SET failed on device lo ; Operation not supported. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- and -------------------------------------------------------------------------- <notice>/etc/init.d/rc3.d/S08pcmcia start Starting external PCMCIA <notice>startproc: execve (/sbin/cardmgr) [ /sbin/cardmgr -m /lib/modules/2.4.18-4GB/ -n pcmcia-external ], [ PWD=/ HOSTNAME=yodh CONSOLE=/dev/console PREVLEVEL=N AU TOBOOT=YES REDIRECT=/dev/tty1 MACHTYPE=i386-suse-linux LINES=34 SHLVL=2 COLUMNS=105 BOOT_IMAGE=linux SHELL=/bin/bash HOSTTYPE=i386 OSTYPE=linux HOME=/ TERM=linux PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/u sr/bin RUNLEVEL=3 INIT_VERSION=sysvinit-2.82 _=/sbin/startproc DAEMON=/sbin/cardmgr ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Are you trying to use encryption?
Nope.
Have you flashed the orinoco card with the latest update from agere?
No, do you think I need to ?
Does it work in Windows?
Yes, flawlessly. Thanks, Dee

This is good. The cardmgr recognizes the card.
Just this one every time I try booting with the PCMCIA card in: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Setting up hostname 'yodh' done
Setting up loopback interfaceifup-wireless: command 'iwconfig lo nick yodh' returned
ifup-wireless: Error for wireless request "Set Nickname" (8B1C) : SET failed on device lo ; Operation not supported.
ifup-wireless: command 'iwconfig lo essid DeeSign Networks' returned
ifup-wireless: Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) : SET failed on device lo ; Operation not supported. --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Something is screwed up in network scripts. You read that I had to modify my ifup-wireless script so it would work? Does the output of ifconfig show your internal ethernet card at eth0? If so, I suggest trying to get the wireless card working manually first, then you can edit the ifup-wireless script. Load the orinoco_cs driver with "modprobe orinoco_cs". It should load a couple of other drivers automatically. Then, try: iwconfig eth1 essid "your network name" mode "your mode" In my case, the mode is "Managed".
Are you trying to use encryption?
Nope.
That simplifies things quite a bit.
Have you flashed the orinoco card with the latest update from agere?
No, do you think I need to ?
Not sure. I updated mine when I first got it after reading that advice in an online article. It may have worked fine without the update. Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MCSE, N+ Right behind you, I see the millions Got spam? Get spastic http://spastic.sourceforge.net
