RE: [SLE] configuring Orinoco wireless pcmcia card
-----Original Message----- From: Charles Griffin [mailto:cng3@yahoo.com]
I'm now trying to configure an Orinoco Silver wireless pcmcia card for my laptop and am having a few issues. I downloaded the linux drivers from the orinoco site and built them per the README, but am having trouble getting the module loaded and therefore getting the card recognized and working.
If you have a 2.4 Kernel you may get better results using the orinoco_cs driver from the pcmcia_cs packages.. See http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net for more details and the pcmcia howto or if you have an earlier kernel try the wvlan_cs driver, again in the pcmcia package. You'll probably want the wireless tools packages see http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Wireless.html

I have the orinoco_cs driver installed and I verified that it is a loaded module by typing "lsmod". I also installed via YaST2 the wireless tools, but am unsure how to use them. Anyway, I still can't get the card configured. I tried setting it up as a network card in YaST2 (and I checked PCMCIA) but no joy. I see that there are several config files in /etc/sysconfig and /etc/pcmcia but I'm at a total loss as to what to configure, especially since it seems that the correct driver is already loaded as a module. I would really appreciate any help you can give. Thanks very much, Charles __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Best Regards, Keith --
I followed all the steps in the FAQ (other than the last part of the section regarding configuring multiple encryption keys) and it still won't work. As an aside, what do I "run" after making changes to the scripts to see if the card works? I've just been rebooting, but there must be another way. Anyway, on a normal bootup, it looks like pcmcia service runs and is loaded, but when it tries to load the eth-pcmcia-0 it says "skipped" but maybe this is normal because it also says that the skipped interface will be set up dynamically by service pcmcia or hotplug. When I remove the card after the laptop is booted up, it gives me one high beep. When I reinsert it, it gives me one low beep then a high beep. When I do "lsmod", it looks like pcmcia_core is loaded, but neither orinoco or orinoco_cs (or yenta_socket if that is needed). It does look like it loaded memory_cs -- plus, the when I go to Preferences|Information|PCMCIA, the dialog box tells me the card is identified as an "Anonymous Memory" card. When I run "cardmgr" as root I get this output: modpath=(null) modsubdir=(null) I have watched my linksys access port/router and the "wireless" led has never lit up, so there has not been any activity. Also, neither of the LEDs on the card light up at any time. I appreciate all the help you all have given me so far. If you have any additional suggestions, I would *really* appreciate it. I would really like to get this card working. I'll be happy to post any of my scripts or other files if that would help. That is normal. It doesn't start until the hotplug service is started. Let's take it one small step at time. First, have you gone into YaST2 and defined an ethernet network card as PCMCIA? If not, do so. I use a manually assigned IP address, DNS, gateway, etc. You can DHCP if your router is set up to assign settings to your internal LAN. What YaST2 will create is a definition for your orinoco card in: /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-pcmcia-0 Here is what mine contains: BOOTPROTO="static" BROADCAST="192.168.1.255" DHCLIENT_SET_DOWN_LINK="yes" IPADDR="192.168.1.252" NETMASK="255.255.255.0" NETWORK="192.168.1.0" STARTMODE="hotplug" UNIQUE="" Please post your settings here after verifying your definition in YaST2, then we can move on to the next step. Yes, I had already configured a pcmcia ethernet card in Yast2. Here is my /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-pcmcia-0 file: BOOTPROTO="dhcp" DHCLIENT_SET_DOWN_LINK="yes" STARTMODE="hotplug" UNIQUE="" I'm pretty sure I have my ap/router set correctly using dhcp. OK, this looks fine for DHCP. Can you check to see if you also have a symbolic link from ifcfg-eth-pcmcia to ifcfg-eth-pcmcia-0? You can check this with "ls -l" from /etc/sysconfig/network. You should see this for the ifcfg-eth-pcmcia file: ifcfg-eth-pcmcia -> /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-pcmcia-0
I'm pretty sure I have my ap/router set correctly using dhcp.
Good. Next, check your /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia file and make sure this variable is set: PCMCIA_SYSTEM="external" Also, what make/model of laptop do you have? Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MCSE, N+ Right behind you, I see the millions Got spam? Get spastic http://spastic.sourceforge.net

Yes, that line is set to "external".
Also, what make/model of laptop do you have?

OK, next I suggest you set/verify these variables in the /etc/sysconfig/hotplug file: HOTPLUG_START_NET=yes (should be the default) HOTPLUG_NET_DEFAULT_HARDWARE=pcmcia This may not be necessary, but I have mine set that way. Then, change this entry in /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.conf: card "Intersil PRISM2 Reference Design 11Mb/s WLAN Card" manfid 0x0156, 0x0002 bind "orinoco_cs" # bind "prism2_cs" Make sure you have the orinoco_cs driver available. I have confirmed that both of those variables in my /etc/sysconfig/hotplug file are set as you have them above.
Then, change this entry in /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.conf:
card "Intersil PRISM2 Reference Design 11Mb/s WLAN Card" manfid 0x0156, 0x0002 bind "orinoco_cs" # bind "prism2_cs"
I double-checked my /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.conf file and I have modified that entry as above. Just to double-check: that particular card is about the 12th down in the list. The second card listed is similar but the "manfid" is different.
Make sure you have the orinoco_cs driver available. You should have this file:
/lib/modules/2.4.18-4GB/pcmcia-external/orinoco_cs.o (8220 bytes)
Yes, that file is there. There is also orinoco-o file 40.4 KB.

Yes, that is the entry I needed to change. You should be able to see which card the system is seeing by inserting your orinoco card and using this command: cardctl ident Here is what I get: Socket 0: no product info available Socket 1: product info: "Lucent Technologies", "WaveLAN/IEEE", "Version 01.01", "" manfid: 0x0156, 0x0002 function: 6 (network) I used the manfid to match the correct entry since so many of them are set to load the prism2 driver. If you don't get correct info in the product info, something is not right with the PCMCIA system. You mentioned earlier that your system thought you had inserted a memory card instead of a wireless LAN card. There are a few different PCMCIA chipsets out there. My Dell uses a TI chipset. Look for something like this in your dmesg log: Linux PCMCIA Card Services 3.1.31 kernel build: 2.4.18-4GB #1 Wed Mar 27 13:57:05 UTC 2002 options: [pci] [cardbus] [apm] Intel ISA/PCI/CardBus PCIC probe: PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 02:0f.0 PCI: Sharing IRQ 11 with 00:1f.2 PCI: Sharing IRQ 11 with 02:0f.1 PCI: Sharing IRQ 11 with 02:0f.2 PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 02:0f.1 PCI: Sharing IRQ 11 with 00:1f.2 PCI: Sharing IRQ 11 with 02:0f.0 PCI: Sharing IRQ 11 with 02:0f.2 TI 4451 rev 00 PCI-to-CardBus at slot 02:0f, mem 0xf2000000

This is not good. The PCMCIA system uses the product info string to match a driver in the card database, so this looks like the key problem. I noticed from your dmesg output that we are using different PCI-to-Cardbus chipsets. Mine is TI 4451 rev 01 and yours appears to be TI 1410 rev 01. I'm not sure how to fix this. Here are a couple of things to try... 1) In /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia, uou could try setting PCMCIA_PCIC="i82365", then to "tcic". 2) You may have some setting for the PCMCIA bus in your BIOS where you can set it to 16-bit mode instead of 32-bit Cardbus mode. I remember having to set the PCMCIA bus on my old Toshiba laptop. Check there and/or experiment. 3) In /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia, there may be options required for PCMCIA_PCIC_OPTS but I don't know what. Read below for more info...
Here is the pertinent part of my dmesg output:
# dmesg Linux PCMCIA Card Services 3.1.31 kernel build: 2.4.18-4GB #1 Wed Mar 27 13:57:05 UTC 2002 options: [pci] [cardbus] [apm] Intel ISA/PCI/CardBus PCIC probe: PCI: Found IRQ 9 for device 00:08.0 PCI: Sharing IRQ 9 with 00:09.0 PCI: Sharing IRQ 9 with 00:09.1 TI 1410 rev 01 PCI-to-CardBus at slot 00:08, mem 0x10000000 host opts [0]: [ring] [pci + serial irq] [pci irq 9] [lat 168/176] [bus 2/2] ISA irqs (scanned) = 3,4,7,11,15 PCI status changes cs: memory probe 0xa0000000-0xa0ffffff: clean. memory_cs: mem0: anonymous: unknown size
That memory_cs module is what I'm curious about. When I do a clean boot, that module appears in lsmod (the orinoco drivers do not appear yet when I do a clean boot and run lsmod command).
I think that's because it can't identify the card so it loads some kind of default driver (anonymous), guessing it is a memory card. I noticed the manfid from cardctl showed the same thing so we are certainly using the same model of orinoco card. I think if we can get PCMCIA to recognize it, it will start working.
I have done lots of reading on this issue, and one question I had was that it looks like there should be a hermes.conf file in /etc/pcmcia. I don't have that file in /etc/pcmcia -- should it be there?
Doesn't have to be. SuSE 7.3 had an orinoco.conf (or similar). The old PCMCIA system used to read in the /etc/pcmcia/config file plus all the files in /etc/pcmcia that ended with .conf to build the card database. The new SuSE 8.0 scripts appear to look in particular files like the wlan-ng.conf for wireless settings. All I need is for Compaq to donate a laptop to me for testing ;) Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MCSE, N+ Right behind you, I see the millions Got spam? Get spastic http://spastic.sourceforge.net
Here are couple more troubleshooting ideas I had last night... 1. Have you updated the flash in your orinoco card since you bought it? I remember in some long lost online doc that you needed to update it to get improved encryption support and there are also bug fixes included. The flash update program, unfortunately, has to be run from windows. I have two cards and I updated both of them before I installed them in Linux. It may not be required since you are not using encryption, but it should not hurt either. You can get the updates from the agere web site: http://www.agere.com/ 2. SuSE includes a nice system report tool called siga. It should be installed by default. The version in 8.0 generates a nice web page of low level hardware and software info. I was able to confirm that my PCMCIA controller is the i82365 from this report. Use this: siga kon -laptop It will generate the report and open Konqueror to display it. You can find the controller info under the PCMCIA section. Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MCSE, N+ Right behind you, I see the millions Got spam? Get spastic http://spastic.sourceforge.net

Keith, Thanks for all of your help and all of your suggestions. I spent a fair amount of time last night trying various things, including changing PCMCIA_PCIC="i82365" then to "tcic" in etc/sysconfig/pcmcia, as well as checking the pcmcia bios settings (of which there were none). I also did lots of "googleing" on the web to see if anyone else had this problem. No luck so far. Thank goodness it was Father's Day -- my wife didn't mind me spending all that time with the laptop! ;-) I have not flashed the card with updated firmware, but that is a good idea. I was also thinking that I wanted to verify that the card worked at all in that other OS that shall remain nameless ;-) .... so I think my next step is to install that OS on the laptop to (i) verify the card works and (ii) update the flash rom in the card per your suggestion. I'll then reinstall SuSE 8.0 and try that siga system report tool as well. I don't have any other pcmcia cards so I was also thinking of buying either a pcmcia modem or maybe another wireless lan card to see if I can get anything to work in that slot. Again, I can't thank you enough for all of your assistance and for the assistance to others who have contributed to this thread with suggestions. Your volunteered time to help out a newbie is *really* appreciated. Best regards, Charles __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Well, it turns out that perhaps I have a hardware problem. I installed Windows 2000 on my laptop and tried to install the orinoco card. I installed the drivers from CD before inserting the card per the instructions. After rebooting (of course!) the "new hardware found" wizard popped up, but when trying to identify the card, it listed a bunch of gibberish with hints of the card's true identifier string -- something like: Orin*^%Mco Wir810jue83les$ *&(K3LAN. When I then navigated to the directory where the Orinoco software had installed the driver, it would not install. I pointed the wizard to the .inf file itself but it still wouldn't work. So, I thought perhaps the card was bad. I bought a Linksys WC11 card (supported in Linux with the same orinoco driver) and got a similar result. It wouldn't install in Windows or SuSE. Now I'm thinking the pcmcia slot is broken somehow. :-( I wonder if the laptop is still under warranty.... Thanks again to everybody on this list, especially Keith Winston, for all the help and advice. It's the generous assistance of the users of this list (along with interesting threads like "Linux & Wife") that makes me want to stay a SuSE user forever (along with a great distribution, of course!). Yep, already flashed the BIOS and it didn't make any difference. Another poster just suggested updating the windows orinoco drivers and I will try that to see if I can at least get it to work in windows. Unfortunately, I am not hopeful since the Linksys card did not work either, but I guess the drivers for that card could also be bad. I'll try anything, however! It's rather unfortunate, but at this point, everything seems to point to some sort of hardware problem since I tried 2 different cards in both SuSE and Windows and have not had a hint of anything working.
