[opensuse] How to get rid of KDE4
Hi list, no offense, it looks great - but I'll wait a little... Someone set up a SuSE11 with KDE4 on, I need KDE3,5 standard instead. I installed (Using YaST) KDE35, but when loggin in I still get the -4 desktop. Where do I kill (for all users and for good to avoid problems to come) this 4? I tried to remove it from within YaST, but I don't know how to handle the smiley... -- -------------------------------------------- Med venlig hilsen/best regards Verner Kjærsgaard Novell Certified Linux Professional 10035701 www.os-academy.dk +45 56964223 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Verner You should be able to install KDE 3.x beside 4.x using the standard Software Management icon in Yast. You then choose on the login screen which session type you want. If you want to remove KDE 4 totally, You can probably _most_ of it through the same software management process, but you may need to leave spme support files on the system if you don't want to spend a long time resolving dependencies. Ran into the same problem and couldn't resolve the dependencies, so I had to re-install. Since it was on a laptop, space is at a premium. Good luck. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Verner, I had Kde3 and Kde4 installed side by side and solved the problem in stages. First I removed all the basic kde stuff with numeral 4 on it. That leaves a lot of minor things but gets rid of the biggies.. Next I deleted the rest. Usually when you get the dependency thing it gives you the option to delete a batch of more kde4 things,, on mine that was usually the second choice. If in doubt, dont delete. One thing I noticed is kde4 will replace some of the kde3 apps like games so those will have to be reinstalled. After about 4 iterations of this delete procedure I successfully removed all kde4 and got my 3 back. You will probably have to go into the login setup to make kdm your default manager. BTW, if you have a blank screen or no kicker panel after you start, from a command line (ALT-F2) do kcontrol and unhide the panel and reselect the panel configuration. Mine went away for some reason but that got it back. Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi list and Richard, - followed your advise, I'm back to normal. Phew... - On KDE4, BTW, when you log off from a remote NX session, the gray "log out" screen is able to *nearly* hang your local desktop. Not so with KDE3.. But I'm back and can now get on with the installation. I don't have my 11.0 machine up, but I posted the solution in another post concerning kde4 on vnc within the last 20 days. Basically, make sure you use the /opt/kde3/bin/startkde to start 3.5 as default. If you are using the /usr/bin/startkde, you are starting kde4. <quote> from the 6/22 post: So if we want kde3, we start /opt/kde3/bin/startkde and if we want 4 we use /usr/bin/startkde. tighvnc issue solved. The question remains, can I start the kde4 desktop with /usr/bin/startkde and run in on top of kde3.5 without any weird consequences biting me? </quote> And, yes, you can start the kde4 desktop on top of kde3.5, but it does cause problems. It looks cool until things go south. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
