[opensuse] opensuse openoffice formatting for word
hi folks, I now have compatible fonts for cross platform... thanks folks... new problem: In opensuse openoffice (default margins all around, and New Times Roman 12p font) single spacing produces 51 typeable lines (no headers or footers). When this simple case is formatted for word.doc (save as) and opened in word on a windblows box the last two lines are bumped down one page and the first page has only 49 typeable lines. Apparently there is a *tiny* difference between respective single spacing lines between the two word processors. To get around the problem I set the line spacing (paragraph formatting) to "fixed 0.19" This gives 49 typeable lines in openoffice, and when opened on windblows also appears with 49 typeable lines. In MS Word the formatting shows an equivalent "exactly 13.7 pt" Similarly, to make a compatible double spacing scheme set openoffice line spacing to "fixed .037" This seems to work fine for word as well. Is there a known difference between the definition in word for single/double spacing and that for openoffice? Is this an openoffice 2.0 word formatting bug? For a given set of parameters (page size, font point size, margins) there does not seem to be a standard definition for what we mean by "single spacing" or "double spacing". Is this a normal annoyance? Thanks very much, in advance for the ear and advice. -- Kind regards, M Harris <>< -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Check under Tools – Options – Openoffice.org Writer – Compatibility There are several OO options there that may help. Some may have to be activated for each document you produce. Check also the default paragraph style. Under Position you may want to check pair kerning. This corrects the space between some pairs of characters and so often shortens lines of text slightly. You will not need this if each line in the two documents is identical. In the default page style, check that, under Page, you have not checked Register true. This is designed for double-sided printing (especially on thin paper where the lines from the obverse can show through) and adjusts the space between lines slightly. These are the things I can think of. The problem for OpenOffice is that the way to be better than Word is not to emulate the features introduced because Microsoft couldn’t handle better formatting. -- JDL -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks much for your suggestions. I will check. -- Kind regards, M Harris <>< -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
