So far I always installed a new harddisk ;-) but this time I have to upgrade, since the harddisk is just used 12 %!!! I have never upgraded before. What do I need to take care of? I have some programs installed, which have not been in the distribution, like apache2, php, bind9, .... How can I make sure that these are not lost, or that the upgrade install again its version of these programs? bye Ronald -- Ronald Wiplinger (CEO of ELMIT) http://www.elmit.com +886 (0) 915 653-452 - I'm a SpamCon Foundation Member, #694, Verify it at http://www.spamcon.org

A full backup! :-| If you can't, then backup everything you can not afford to loose (/home probably), including configuration files (/etc). I have
some programs installed, which have not been in the distribution,
backup /usr/local/*, and the sources or rpms of all thos new things.
How can I make sure that these are not lost, or that the upgrade install again its version of these programs?
Try the upgrade, and follow the instructions carefully. Check that the install programs detects all your partitions (expert mode probably). It should ask you about packages it doesn't know what to do. It should work, but if it fails, you have the backup. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

I upgraded from 7.3 to 8.0 with no problems (IIRC). During install, choose the update installed packages only or something like that. If what you have is newer, should be no problem.
