HI guys Since i was falling short of diskspace i deleted some seemingly harmless packages. After that i am unable to login into my machine . However I am able to login into a SINGLE user mode but dont know what to do once in that mode . Even yast exists out with a error message . Also when i try to login into the machine in its default runlevel i am never prompted for the password after entering the login name ..Infact the login prompt again comes back I was able to see one error message at some point which complained of not able to create some temporary file.. My .profile is fairly simple and doesnt need any temp files to be created Can anybody PLEASE advise what to do .. I have hit the panic button as i need the files on my linux system urgently PLease advise Thanx for ur time Bye Anand Raman -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
HI guys I am finally answering the question i posed a few days back .. I could reclaim my system by 1. inserting the cdrom 2. analyzing all the dependencies.. This analysis showed up 12 packages which were not present in my system .. After installing these packages the system is working as before with no hickups. Here is the list of all the 12 packages which i installed today to reclaim my system .. Can any one please tell me if any one of these needed for the proper working of the system 1. cracklib 2. a2ps 3. mtools 4. f2c 5. ge_info 6. ge_exec 7. gnlibs 8. i4l 9. mgetty 10. audiofil 11. esound 12. wavplay I suspect that the system must be causing problems due to the absence of cracklib ( not very sure ) .. Can somebody enlighten me on this as all the other packages deal with multimedia, modem and postscript and emacs Thanx for ur time and help Bye Anand Raman .. Anand Raman wrote:

Good!

Yes, cracklib is the culprit. It is needed for password verification. See /usr/doc/packages/cracklib/README for details. 1. cracklib Lenz covered this one.
2. a2ps I think some utils might need this.
3. mtools Only if you use DOS-formatted floppies.
4. f2c 5. ge_info 6. ge_exec 7. gnlibs
8. i4l Only needed if you use an internal ISDN card.
9. mgetty AFAIR this is the default getty used for the console. If it is, you almost certainly need it. (I might be wrong)
10. audiofil 11. esound 12. wavplay If you don't have a soundcard, you'll do just fine without these three.

At least some of these packages should not be needed by a minimum install. I think SuSE ought to take a look at the dependencies of all packages, and have them only require other packages, if they are actually necessary for the functioning of a package. For instance, enlightenment should not be requiring esound, since it is quite possible to run enlightenment without any sound at all. While they are at it, some of the packages ought to be split up in smaller packages. The package pop (or is it imap? The one with fetchmail.) comes to mind. Why should I have to install the other stuff, when all I need is fetchmail? -- Regards Med venlig hilsen Ole Kofoed Hansen mailto:k01164@ko.sdu.dk ICQ-UIN: 25773325 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Agreed. I will forward this to the package maintainer.

Guess what, we already did this for 6.3. :) Fetchmail is now a separate package called "fetchml". Great. One more (minor) annoyance is gone. Did you do something similar to other packages? Like some of the KDE stuff could also be split up. Let's just hope, we did not add too many new annoyances :)

I am not very familiar with the KDE packages. Please send these kind of comments to feedback@suse.de, thanks!
