If I try to update via YOU, it says it was not able to retrieve the mirrors list and asks me if I would like to configure it manually, but I'm not sure what FTP address to provide. Please advise. Go to http://www.novell.com/products/linuxprofessional/downloads/ftp/int_mirrors.h... and pick one.

I should have been more specific. It asks for the server and folder. I tried using: ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/suse/i386/9.3/suse/ and even split it up into mirrors.kernel.org and then suse/i386/9.3/suse but it did not work. Details: Warning: Cannot fetch remote server list. Only user-defined patch sources will be available. Possible solution: Check network connection. URL: http://www.suse.de/cgi-bin/suseservers.cgi<br>couldn't connect to host Then I click Ignore. System Information: There was no update executed upto now. Product: SUSE LINUX Version: 9.3 Update Configuration: Installation Source: User-Defined location Location: <blank> I hit New Server. Select type of URL: FTP, OK. Server and Directory: Protocol: FTP Server Name: mirrors.kernel.org Directory on Server: suse/i386/9.3/suse/ Authentic: Anonymous OK, Next Retrieving information about new updates: Hangs at 0%. Error: Patch information retrieval failed. error couldn't connect to host I don't understand. My net connection is perfectly alright at around 28 kBps. Is it possible for me to download and install everything manually through FTP or something? -- (o- Penguin #395953 lives at http://samvit.org //\ subsisting on ancient Indian wisdom ... ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/suse/i386/9.3/suse/ It helps to have the correct directory:
ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/suse/i389/9.3, just like it says in the list of mirrors.

I'm sorry, but the list says: mirrors.kernel.org/suse/ That's it. And *389*??? Whereforth comes *that*? Thanks for your efforts. -- (o- Penguin #395953 lives at http://samvit.org //\ subsisting on ancient Indian wisdom ... V_/_ and modern computing efficiency! :)

My apologies, the '9' is a typo --- use ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/suse/i386/9.3 I think none of this would have arisen if you had first read the URL concerning ftp installations of SuSE Linux, at http://www.novell.com/products/linuxprofessional/downloads/suse_linux/index.... which is clear that you should point to ../i386/9.3 (or ../i386/current which is a symbolic link to the same place), not to .../9.3/suse

Ah, apologies. That does show the address. But I tried it and it appears that it's a problem with my network only. Waiting for the ISP to fix it. Meanwhile since my downloads are working fine, can I simply download the patch directory or something? -- (o- Penguin #395953 lives at http://samvit.org //\ subsisting on ancient Indian wisdom ... You should be able to, but I have never done an installation or patch that way, so I cannot be certain.

Yes, be way of creating a "patch disk", which in esence consists of duplicating the directory structure in the ftp server. I think this is documented somewhere in the suse site or the unoficial suse faq. Carlos thanks. How much of the directory structure, to wit, which directory and its entire contents in the ftp server should I duplicate on my disk? Perhaps ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/suse/i386/update/9.3? -- (o- Penguin #395953 lives at http://samvit.org //\ subsisting on ancient Indian wisdom ... V_/_ and modern computing efficiency! :)

Sorry, I don't remember right now, I haven't done it for a year or more. But as I say, it is documented somewhere (www.suse.de/en, probably) and has been comented here, in this list. Search for local update server, or patch/update disk. - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFDHE4jtTMYHG2NR9URAnnLAKCWyoRsP6BIQzdpKGqqN2jTY9dB7wCeIj0L lbrMAe7HltodEy7Cp2VTnKw= =cAri -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Shriramana, I suggest you look at the SUSE Support knowledgebase http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/index.html it is a great resource relating to problems with the different versions of SuSE. I think you may find the information here. How To Create a Patch CD http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/09/fhassel_patchcd.html -- Regards, Graham Smith
