Hi All I'm at a loss. Until last night I was able to view my pictures on my (USB) CompactFlash cardreader. When I tried again this morning , (card inside the reader) : The USB port beeped. /etc/fstab showed that the reader was mounted but..............no icon on the desktop as before. SuSE plugger says that the device is available and active. When trying to think back what I did , I deleted the icon from the desktop but that icon should come back when you restart the computer ? Can anybody help me out here , please. -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south. Disclaimer: Any errors in spelling, tact, or fact are transmission errors."

NO, fstab doesn't tell you what *is* mounted - it tells the system what is *available* to be mounted.

Don't know about that - I've ditched SuSEplugger and SuSEwatcher.

You should be able to mount it manually: mount <device name as in fstab> and unmount it when you finish umount <device> HTH Dylan -- "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Benjamin Franklin

Ok. Thanks for your reply. I mounted the device as : mount /dev/sdb1 Just to make sure I mounted it again and got the message "device is already mounted" But how do I access it now? Because no icon on the desktop. -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south. Disclaimer: Any errors in spelling, tact, or fact are transmission errors."

You do not need a icon to open a directory. You can access the directory from a shell (xterm,konsole,...) by cd-ing to the directory, /mount/sdb1 (assuming that that is the directory associated with /dev/sdb1 in fstab) or doing the same with mc, or by opening konqueror or fr or ... in the directory /mount/sdb1. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org

this is /not/ ms-windows... try reading some basic guides on Linux. Alternatively fire up the konqueror file browser and browse to the mount point or else fire up Kdiskfree, right click on the required entry and select the "open in file manager" option. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFAOchDNclAUt2HMX8RAmsuAJ9J51N+IRslPTFdDf8O4vu4gZ5AjgCfcZiv AssUuhgJ/MziFgYzRo61rls= =eH9H -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

I know this is not windows, haven't used it for more than three years. :-) Reading basic stuff about Linux? Of course I have done that, however this is the first time that I have to "mount" manually. I used to plug in my USB cardreader, wait one minute and up comes an icon on the desktop and way you go. No need at all to do anything else, but for some unknown reason to me this stopped.

K diskfree did the trick , never used it before ,didn't even think about to use this program but voila it is all working perfect again now. Thanks. -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south. Disclaimer: Any errors in spelling, tact, or fact are transmission errors."

If you are unable to mount it manually using 'mount -t vfat ....' with a directory listed in fstab, you probably unplugged the card/cardreader without umount.ing. Correcting this in my experience has required the normal windoz solution to all, a reboot. BUT, I would be very happy to learn another method. gud luk, -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org

I actually tried that a couple of times ( the reboot) but it didn't make any difference. You could be right that I unplugged ( or deleted the icon) without umounting. But everything should be back to normal after a reboot , isn't it? -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south. Disclaimer: Any errors in spelling, tact, or fact are transmission errors."

The reboot should have reset everything to normal, yes. I, once, had to have the subject device plugged in on reboot to regain the icons on the desktop ???? -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org

I don't know. I can only tell you how I do it. I have a cardreader which accepts several types of cards but I'm only interested in CompactFlash and SmartMedia. So, I made directories /media/cf and /media/sm. In /etc/fstab I have, /dev/sda1 /media/cf auto noauto,user,gid=users,umask=0002,sync 0 0 /dev/sdb1 /media/sc auto noauto,user,gid=users,umask=0002,sync 0 0 (I believe they mount as vfat so "sync" doesn't work but, as it seems to do no harm, I've left it in.) In KDE, I then use KwikDisk to mount the appropriate card. (I use mountapp in Fluxbox.) But, of course, you can mount it however you like. I suppose you could add a desktop icon to do this but, as I'm not a fan of desktop icons, I leave this to your imagination! -- Vic Ayres

When I unplugged ( or deleted the icon) without umounting I ruined my memory stick. I reformatted the drive, reloaded the information from a good memory stick; nothing worked. I don't know if you can ruin a card reader in this way but I think it is a possiblity. Jerome
