Defragmenting and Repartitioning for Quotas
Hi list, I want to implement quotas on both a SuSE 7.3 and 8.0 Systems. The problem is that there is only one large partition for everything. that is to say: dev/sda7 / reiserfs ... and I would like to take a partition for users with a quota configuration. The idea I have is to do something like a _defragmentation_ and _repartitioning_, creating a /users partition with a quotas configuration. Can it be done in a _running system_? Thanks in advance for any hint ;-) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~. Geovanny Guamán ~. TACteam GmbH Webmaster, ~. http://www.tacteam.de ~. http://www.flyconnect.de ~. Not unless there's another disk in the machine that you are moving things to. If you reboot to the rescue system you can resize the filesystem with resize_reiserfs though. Fragmentation really shouldn't be an issue. -- -ckm
Fragmentation is essentially (if not actually) a non-issue. The manner in which the files systems is implimented ( in the various forms available - rieserfs, ext2/3 JFS etc..) the concept of defragmenting a hdd is somewhat like filling a helium blimp with hot air. In otherwords, if you have ever seen the message "hdx has been mounted 32 times without blah blah" and then fsck mounts and runs on a particular partition (particularly true with ext2/3) and the you see the message like "2.3% non-contigious" that is an indication the the fs has been updated. Fragmentation is really only an issue on M$ systems/partitions. Linux can be defragmented but as is stated before - it is more over a waste of time and presents more negative than positive outcomes.
