Well, to me your, diction, spelling, punctuation and fractured grammar combine to lend a unique air of perplexity to many of your posts. No offense, of course. As in all international fora, the standards we'd apply to professional communication are really not appropriate and often we must expend some extra effort to glean the writer's probable intention. Actually, you are doing yourself no favours by demonstrating your standard of written English. You are not a heavy-weight, with the best will in the world.
The Whole darn bunch of you are so childish it is really amazing to see ..how SUPPOSED full grown men get there underwear knotted so firmley around there windpipes just because someone does not go running for the sepll checker for every single word , And as for your so called diction well i personally could not give a stuff on wether or not you undwerstand ENGLISH .
I really feel incapable of commenting on this non-sense, except to say "diction" is about pronunciation, not writing, and I use a spelling checker because even my education and experience will not stop me making typing errors, or mis-spelling one of the quarter of a million words or so in English. I don't have a problem with accepting that I make errors, nor in wishing to improve. What's your problem? If the aim of education is to make one realise how little one really knows, I guess the educational system is worse than I thought (and I think it's pretty bad).
So keep it up LADIES cus there aint not no men amongst you thats a certain fact all a bunch of high school nancies fannying around in your big butch football gear yeah big deal Ooohhhh i´m scared for shure .

I would be embarrassed to write such non-sense, let alone have other people see it. This list is not for men or women, children or adults (or even, it seems, for the edcationally able- it is for all of us. You really do show a side of your personality only a suitably qualified person should see, as well as, I suspect, a real lack of confidence in yourself.
Oh yes and one for you fred as well

That's right, Fred is very like a donkey, he's steadfast on this list, produces good support for those who need it, and gives this list and others a lot of time and effort.
Childs play thats what this is thats all unlike the jerk that broke into my car and stole the tools from the boot now he had better hope his mommy is still alive cus he is going to need here to feed ,water dress and look afteer him soon ,
Is that because, if he reads this list, he'll be laughing so much he'll be incapable of doing anything else? You see it is really as simple as sticks and stones will break my
bones but nemes will never hurt me except that with no hands there is no sticks no stones ,
I really cannot make any sense out of this.

Wrong. "Diction" is about choice of words (note its similarity to "dictionary"). It is a common misnomer to equate it to enunciation. To wit (from the on-line Webster's Unabridged 1913 dictionary): "Diction \Dic"tion\, n. [L. dicto a saying, a word, fr. dicere, dictum, to say; akin to dicare to proclaim, and to E. teach, token: cf. F. diction. See Teach, and cf. Benison, Dedicate, Index, Judge, Preach, Vengeance.] Choice of words for the expression of ideas; the construction, disposition, and application of words in discourse, with regard to clearness, accuracy, variety, etc.; mode of expression; language; as, the diction of Chaucer's poems." WordNet's definition reflects the newer confused usage as well as the classic definition: "diction n 1: the articulation of speech regarded from the point of view of its intelligibility to the audience [syn: enunciation] 2: the manner in which something is expressed in words; "use concise military verbiage"- G.S.Patton [syn: wording, phrasing, phraseology, choice of words, verbiage]"

Yes, (clearly lifted from the OED), "a saying" or speech, "to proclaim" etc., this about how words are spoken. Enunciation is, OTOH, (OED again) "The action of giving definite expression to (a law, principle, etc.,)" or, secondly, "A proposition or statement". : ) Terence

This is just SAD, you have over a paragraph of rambling on and on and hardly any of it makes sense at all. Seems to be some random shit about Microsoft, but it's hard as shit to understand, makes hardly any sense, and for someone bashing Microsoft, you type in the same manner they have security. Scares me too.... Do you know what MSA registered means and why they would have 'names' like 'Quinton 11'? It *does* sound like CD radio. I've googled for MSA anything but found nothing.

Mark, I note and agree with your initial point (although how this is different to us all being pointed to a web-site to see for ourselves is difficult to see), but your "in parenthesis" opinion is another question. This country has taken in/is taking in a very large number of immigrants, to the point where many of us (read me, if you want to, before you nit-pick) are very concerned. Nobody I know was ever asked if we wanted "a multi-cultural society" (and I'm talking back three generations)- we were told we had to like it. When reporting the obvious is not acceptable because of "Political Correctness" then "1984" isn't the future, it's now. Don't send anything over the 'net if you're not prepared to have it used (another aspect of "Big Brother") is the answer. Terence

Presumably, this info is available so that Radio Amateurs can be publicly accountable for their Radio Activities, such as interference and use of bandwidth. I think that it is an abuse of liberty to use a Radio Amateur's call sign [presumably given to allow another channel of friendship an communication] to out him when he is not transgressing any Radio communication rule, for which the information is made avaialble.

Pete, I did think that you got unjustly torched at the beginning, and when you got outed by a made-for-the-job nym, you got a lot of visible support and I imagine that the majority were also supportive. So you had the high ground. Obviously, keeping it is not part of your exit strategy. You do have an exit stategy, don't you? I think people can accept that you might have become a bit over excited yesterday, and with it being Christmas, for you and us, just overlook your contribution. But, having won yesterday a dirty fight yesterday on points, why get out of bed on the wrong side today and start another 12 rounds? I am sure that many are wondering how much more of your output is coming before you get to your exit strategy. Please stop while it is worth stopping.

Please just stop it. It was escalation of talk like this yesterday which stoked the whole thing up and lead to someone feeling he had the right to make dreadful breach of Peter's privacy. And FWIW talk like "Who the HELL are you..." and "Shut the fuck up" and "kick your ass" are no better than the talk complained of. IIRC correctly, this all started with a complaint about Peter's obscure use of English. Add in considerable transatlantic differences in perception of non-literary language, and the L1 speaker of US English not going to have good control over how this is received by the L2 speaker of US English. Result, it is quite likely to flare up again.

If you invent your own language, expect to communicate with very few others. Reusing words from an existing language in Humpty Dumpty style is no different. We won't grok you. You could, however, have a career as an author. I'm thinking Anthony Burgess and his novel, "Clockwork Orange." He's a countryman of yours, I believe.

Hey, steady there, guys- I'll admit to Anthony Burgess, but I draw the line at the other! I'll admit our Labour Party endowed state education system is not that good, but it isn't as bad as that (I hope). Terence

Somebody expresses a doubt about Novell's commitment to SuSE Linux, based with reason on the appearance of Novell's site. Pete provides some reassurance about SuSE, expressing himself in a non-literary[*] form of English [despite referring to Richard III], making reference to extrusions resulting from bodily function. Perceptions about the Novell site, however are quite justified. [*That's 'non literary', not 'illiterate'] Pete is not fully understood by whole list population with English as 2nd language and by half the population with a English as a first language, although anybody who did not fully understand it, surely understood that he did not think Novell's web presentation of SuSE was very good. 40 posts then follow, with escalating criticism to a flame war, several plonkings, a list registration of a flaming nym and a TOTALLY unwarranted web outing of a list member [who contributed to the escalation]. Loss: A previously good thread, demonstrating that people are not getting a good experience of the access to SuSE from www.novell.com. What a juvenile waste of bandwidth which makes Novell's 'enthusuiast' market sector look like a load of toothpaste squeezers who are well worthy of dropping from Novell's business plan. Think! Please?

You couldn't have looked very hard. On that page, there's an item "linux products and solutions". That takes you to a page with "SUSE LINUX products", which takes you to the SuSE Professional page.

I should have qualified myself. I'm aware it is on the site, somewhere. But it isn't on the Products page (http://www.novell.com/products) so I'm assuming it isn't something Novell are interested in pushing.

Or perhaps they have two product lines, the old Novell products and Linux, which are on different sites.

You are correct, that it is not on the page you reference, but from the
home page, if you click on SUSE Linux products, the menu has SuSE Linux
professional.

Let's see, It became available on 10/25/04 and depending on where you live? The first week of November. Traditionally, The release dates are; or have been 6 month intervals. Sometimes a tad bit sooner. We should see a new one in about April/May. The naming scheme will not be known to us Joe/Bo's until it's released or if some tester spills the beans on one of these many Linux sites.
I need to upgrade fairly soon from 9.0, but if a 9.3 (or 10.0) will be out soon, I'll wait.

I just brought up the SuSE home page and "SUSE LINUX Professional" is prominently displayed right at the top of the page under "enthusiasts".
Yeah, I just noticed that too. Now, I like Novell, love the funding they're pouring into their SuSE & Ximian divisions (whoa, how on-message am I?), and how they seem to "get" Free Software all of a sudden (ahem), however, tagging SLP with 'enthusiasts' suggests two possible futures to me: 1) The Fedoraesque community release of SuSE that was being mooted back in October may actually happen (w00t!), in which case, consider me a nominee for GNOME maintainer. 2) It's much easier to drop enthusiasts than enterprise customers, SLP will be dropped as a product line altogether (possibly after one more release) and Novell will focus on NLD, in which case, I'm off to Ubuntu. -- James Ogley james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://rubberturnip.org.uk Currently playing: Radio Five Live

[snip] Interesting, I saw that contrast (Enthusiasts in left column and Enterprise in right column) and started to wonder whether Novell were really comfortable with a chunk of their customers ... anoraks, omg, geeks, er no ... let's call them enthusiasts! The same thing runs through their "cool" stuff section where tutes on how to use the GIMP jostle uneasily with business talk about selling Linux to your boss. Just my 2 cents, but I hope Novell do not decide to drop these "enthusiasts" or downgrade them to testing betaware. They are likely to be tomorrow's IT managers and opinion-formers. But anyway, it's just a website and perhaps it's all down to strange ideas introduced by the marketing department. Someone has to write the copy to stick on the screen. :) Fish
