Nothing - the drive on hda doesn't support barriers, so they are switched off in the kernel, that's all... Dylan
Thanks

Ah, I missed these posts previously because I spelled "barriers" differently :-) So, I get only one such message, referring to my hda3. By implication... and as a matter of fact.... I also have hda1 and hda2 partitions on that same hard drive. Those two do not report a problem. Also, my hdb drive is the identical model to my hda, and there are no messages about "barrier-based sync" referring to that drive. So, if what you say is true, then one portion of my hda has recently(?) stopped supporting barriers. Does that imply that I **DO** have a physical hardware problem after all, and that I should buy a replacement drive and install it before something nasty happens... again? I had thought that the reporting discrepancy might be because hda3 was my "/" partition, and therefore accessed at a more critical time than /home and /var on other drives and partitions. However, Flavio got the message on his /home, which kinda shoots down my optimistic little fantasy. Hmm. Anybody know more about this topic and can suggest some brief reading? Kevin
